Ongoing Events and Entertainment
Come just to listen or to dance to the blue grass and old time musicians who play every  Tuesday and Saturday beginning at 7p. Admission  is $5 on Tuesday and $6 on Saturday. Line Dancing classes are also offered on Monday nights beginning at 6p. The Jubilee is located on North Main Street, across from the Courthouse.

Barn Quilt Trails 

Barns and other buildings around the county display squares illustrating quilt patterns and add interest to a driving tour of the countryside. Drop by Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center for a brochure. We are in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.

 

Driving Loops
Brochures for three driving loops of the Alleghany country-side are available at the Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center. Each loop is about a leisurely hour's drive and includes information on historic points along the way. The Chamber office is in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.
Be sure to visit when planning a trip this Spring or Summer. Open Thursday through Saturday, 10a to 5p. There's never an admission charge. Stop by to experience local history and to see the new displays, 7 North Main Street, Sparta.

 

Veterans' Morning Coffee & Breakfast
 at the VFW
The VFW hosts an informal full breakfast including, biscuits, gravy, eggs, bacon, sausage, grits, and coffee just for veterans every Wednesday from 8:30-11a. Click to learn more.
 
The VFW Military Museum is open to the public, 10a-2p, every Wednesday and Saturday in the basement of the VFW Post 7034, 1193 Us Highway 21 S, Sparta, NC. Admission is free.

Ash Wednesday Service
Sparta Presbyterian Church will offer an Ash Wednesday service on Wednesday, February 10, at noon in the church sanctuary at 160 South Main Street. The service will include communion and the imposition of ashes. It is designed to accommodate people on their lunch hour. All are invited to begin the season of Lent with us in this special service. 336-372-5045.

Studio Redwood Classes Starting Up Again!
Valentine Class! - Saturday, February 13th from 10a-1p. Paint a "You are Loved" canvas! Step by step. All supplies furnished. Cost $35. Ages 14-adult. Refreshments provided, bring your own beverage. Must pre-register 1 week prior to class.

Alleghany Jubilee Happenings!
Join us for the Hillbilly Hoedown with Rise and Shine Band every Tuesday night. On Tuesday, February 9, we will have our February birthday celebration & Valentine's Dance. Cake, ice cream and finger foods will be served. No alcohol. Admission $5 on Tuesday, $6 on Saturday, under 12 years old free. Hours are 7-10p with all ages welcome, unless otherwise noted.

Saturday, February 6

Winter Hike: Meet at the 221 Access Visitor Center, New River State Park, at 1p for a nature hike discussing various aspects about nature in winter. This hike will be about 2 miles long and will take place on trails that are easy to moderate for the average person. For more information call 336-982-2587.


Sunday, February 7

Black Bears: Learn about Black Bears! Join a Park Ranger to learn about this often feared creature. Black bears can be found throughout a large portion of NC. They often make the news when they pass through a populated area. This program will separate the facts and myths about black bears. Winter Wonderland Hike: Winter can be an amazing time to explore the forest in a whole new way! Come join a ranger for a hike in this winter wonderland. There is no such thing as bad weather, just unprepared. So, come prepared for the weather. This hike will be approximately 1 mile along the Hickory Trail.
