Come just to listen or to dance to the blue grass and old time musicians who play every  Tuesday and Saturday beginning at 7p. Admission  is $5 on Tuesday and $6 on Saturday. Line Dancing classes are also offered on Monday nights beginning at 6p. The Jubilee is located on North Main Street, across from the Courthouse.

Barn Quilt Trails 

Barns and other buildings around the county display squares illustrating quilt patterns and add interest to a driving tour of the countryside. Drop by Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center for a brochure. We are in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.

 

Driving Loops
Brochures for three driving loops of the Alleghany country-side are available at the Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center. Each loop is about a leisurely hour's drive and includes information on historic points along the way. The Chamber office is in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.
Be sure to visit when planning a trip this Spring or Summer. Open Thursday through Saturday, 10a to 5p. There's never an admission charge. Stop by to experience local history and to see the new displays, 7 North Main Street, Sparta.

 

Veterans' Morning Coffee & Breakfast
 at the VFW
The VFW hosts an informal full breakfast including, biscuits, gravy, eggs, bacon, sausage, grits, and coffee just for veterans every Wednesday from 8:30-11a. Click to learn more.

Chamber Picnic

The Alleghany Chamber of Commerce is hosting its Annual picnic on Monday August 10th starting at 5:30 pm at Crouse Park. Hotdogs and drinks will be provided by the Chamber, and everyone is

asked to bring a side dish to share.

Hillbilly Comedy Show on PBS

UNC- TV will feature the Hillbilly Comedy & Variety Show on the PBS North Carolina Weekend Program on Friday, October 1st at 9 pm and then again on Saturday, October 2nd at 8:30 pm.

Healthy Living Series

Holistic Health and Wellness and Dr. Todd A. Smith conclude their Healthy Living Series with a general Q&A session. The workshops will be around 60 minutes. They will be held at Sparky's Coffeehouse on Thursday, August 6th and Tuesday, August 18th. Both workshops will begin at noon so make sure to bring a bagged lunch. Kids Triathlon

The Alleghany County Wellness Center is putting on a children's Triathlon on August 8th beginning at 7:30 am. Preregistration can be completed by mail or online at sportoften.com. Ages 4-14. Mission Meal

Sunday August 9th Sparta United Methodist Church will have a Mission Meal. Proceeds for this lunch will support the formation of mission kits for international relief. Sponsored by Sparta United Methodist Women, beginning at 12:15 pm.

AMH Fashion Show

Alleghany Memorial Hospital Foundation will be sponsoring a Fashion Show & Luncheon at Olde Beau Country Club on August 15th beginning at 11:30 am. Advance tickets are $25. Come early and shop for clothing and accessories. For more info please call Helen Ruth Almond at 336-372-3281.

Demo Derby

The Sparta Volunteer Fire Department and Masons sponsor this Demo Derby on August 15 from 5:30- 9 pm at the Alleghany County Fairgrounds. For more information, contact the Recreation Department at 704-929-9629 or by email at [email protected].

Music on the Deck

Harmony Hill Bed & Breakfast will have Music on the Deck every third Saturday night each month starting in June through October. On August 15th from 7- 9 pm.  Make plans to enjoy summer evenings in this beautiful setting to good music!. 336-372-6868.

Slab Building and Glazing Workshop

For this workshop, the first session will be a one hour hand building class, where each person will make a flower vase out of a slab of clay. The vases will be fired before the 2nd session. In the 2nd session the class will learn how to glaze their vase. The vases will be glaze fired in kiln and ready for students to pick up a week or two later. $35 limited to 8 students. On August 15th and 29th starting at 10am.

Effective Communication Strategies

This program explores how communication takes place when someone has Alzheimer's disease. For caregivers, learning to decode messages through attitude, tone of voice, facial expressions, and body language can help both parties to connect and communicate in meaningful ways. Bring Lunch. Fifth Third Bank and Stand up to Cancer

Alleghany Jubilee Happenings!
Join us for the Hillbilly Hoedown with Rise and Shine Band every Tuesday night. On Tuesday, August 11th, we will have our August  birthday celebration. Cake and ice cream will be served. No alcohol.  Admission $5 on Tuesday, $6 on Saturday, under 12 years old free. Hours are 7-10 p with all ages welcome.

Studio Redwood 
 
Stained Glass Workshop- Studio Redwood is putting on this stained glass workshop. On Saturday August 8th from 10am- 2pm. $40.
 
Dye a Silk Scarf- Studio Redwood presents lessons on how to hand dye a silk scarf. Ages 14-adult. 6pm-8pm on August 10th. $45 to attend includes all supplies and a dessert

Dance classes are now available in the same building as Studio Redwood.

Registration ends 1 week prior to each class. Class sizes are limited. SRI reserves the right to cancel or reschedule any class.

Sing Along with Ranger Joe- Bring the kids out to have a fun time singing and learning about nature! Meet at the lower picnic area at the 221 Access Area for this exciting, free program (or inside the visitor center if bad weather). Starts at 7:30 pm on August 7. Meet at the 221 Lower Picnic Area of New River State Park.


 

Slithering Scales- Meet a Ranger at the US 221 Access Visitor Center to learn lots of things about snakes. If you find a shed snake skin in your yard, can you tell if it came from a venomous snake? Join a park ranger to learn this and a whole lot more about snakes! The ranger will talk about the common snakes of the High Country and the difference between venomous and non-venomous snakes. You will also get to meet Freddy, our resident interpretative snake. Starts at 6 pm on August 7. Meet at the 221 Access Visitor Center of New River State Park.

 

 

Saturday August 8th


 

 

Ranger Campfire ProgramMeet the park ranger and learn about all the fascinating things rangers do. The ranger will share some of his personal stories of ranger activities through the years. You will also get to ask him questions about being a ranger. Starts at 8:30 pm on August 8. Meet at 221 Access Visitor Center of New River State Park.

 

Salamander Hike- Meet at the campground washhouse in Wagoner Access Area to enjoy an evening hike with the park ranger. You will be going on a hunt for salamanders! See how many you can find, and learn about these fascinating creatures. Starts at 6 pm on August 8. Meet at Wagoner Access Area of New River State Park.

 
Make your own Corn Husk Doll- Make your own Corn Husk Doll just as Native Americans and Early Europeans did when they began to settle the New River Valley. Supplies provided. Meet at the Apple tree picnic area located at Wagoner Access of New River State Park. Call 982-2587 for more info or directions. Begins at 3 pm.

Stream Safari- Join a park ranger and discover the life of a mountain stream. We will be taking a closer look at the macro-invertebrates that live in the water. Prepare to get wet! Starts at: 2:00pm on August 8th Meet at: Beside Campsite 55 in the B Loop of the Family Campground of Stone Mountain State Park.

Guided Canoe Trip- Come and Canoe the New River with a park ranger. Learn the history of the river and basic canoe instruction while you enjoy a leisurely trip down the New. Wear clothing and shoes suitable for being in the water. Water temperature is cooler than the air. Space is limited and reservations are required. There is a small fee per person to cover the cost of shuttle service. Please call 336-982-2587 to reserve your space. Starts at 1 pm on August 9. Meet at Wagoner Access in New River State Park. 


 

Aquatic Sampling- Have some fun in the New River and learn how to be a citizen scientist. Find out how to determine if you have a healthy clean creek or pond water by joining New River State Park staff. Get in the water and search for aquatic insects, crayfish, and small fish. What critters we find tells us if the river is clean and healthy. Great fun for families. Meet at the office at Wagoner Access of New River State Park. Call 982-2587 for more info or directions.
