Barn Quilt Trails 
Barns and other buildings around the county display squares illustrating quilt patterns and add interest to a driving tour of the countryside. Drop by Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center for a brochure. We are in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.

 

Driving Loops
Brochures for three driving loops of the Alleghany country-side are available at the Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center. Each loop is about a leisurely hour's drive and includes information on historic points along the way. The Chamber office is in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.
Be sure to visit when planning a trip this Spring or Summer. Open Thursday through Saturday, 10a to 5p. There's never an admission charge. Stop by to experience local history and to see the new displays, 7 North Main Street, Sparta.

 

Veterans' Morning Coffee & Breakfast
 at the VFW
The VFW hosts an informal full breakfast including, biscuits, gravy, eggs, bacon, sausage, grits, and coffee just for veterans every Wednesday from 8:30-11a. Click to learn more.
 
The VFW Military Museum is open to the public, 10a-2p, every Wednesday and Saturday in the basement of the VFW Post 7034, 1193 Us Highway 21 S, Sparta, NC. Admission is free.

We would like to welcome St. Frances of Rome Catholic Church, 29 Highland Drive, Sparta, NC as new members of the Chamber. High Country Lights

High Country Lights, Northwest North Carolina's premier animated light show, features over 100K lights choreographed to your favorite Christmas tunes on 96.5 FM. This free light show, hosted by Glade Creek Volunteer Fire Department, can be seen nightly starting at 6pm Thanksgiving through New Year's Day. Festival of Trees

Come and enjoy the Christmas season by viewing our Festival of Trees! Our trees will be on display at the Dysart Building (the small building to the left of the Courthouse) and on the Alleghany County Courthouse lawn. Open to the public.No admission, donations appreciated. Sponsored by the Sparta Revitalization Committee. Open Nov 28 & 29, and Dec 5 & 6, from 10:30a-3:30p.

Ugly Christmas Sweater Party!

The Vintage Cottage is hosting an Ugly Christmas Sweater party on Saturday, Nov 29 from 2-3p. There will be complimentary cookies, cocoa, and eggnog. The person with the ugliest Christmas sweater wins a gift basket. There will also be a special sale during this time. Participants in the sweater contest are not required to remain on the premises for the whole hour. See you there!

Moravian Love Feast and Candlelight Service

Join us for a celebration of Christmas with music, singing, candles, and a traditional Moravian Love Feast! Music will be provided by the Almost Irish Band, and the Sparta Presbyterian Church children's choir. At Sparta Presbyterian Church, 160 S Main Street, Sparta on November 30, 2014 at 5 pm. Questions? Antique Quilts at the Alleghany County Library
The Alleghany Educational Foundation has antique quilts on display and for sale at the Alleghany County Public Library during the month of November. The proceeds from the quilts will be used to fund college scholarships for Alleghany students. Also on display are pewter ornaments and jewelry created and designed by 'House of Morgan Pewter', exhibited by Melvin Miles. 336-372-5573 for more information.

Nature Hike at New River State Park - Join us at the Wagoner Access at 2p for a 1 mile guided nature hike. This nature hike will touch on several topics such as wildlife, plants, park history and the New River. This hike will take place on easy to moderate trails. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes. Hibernation Station at New River State ParkWhat do all the animals do for winter? Have you ever wondered why you don't see as many animals? Where do they go and how do they survive? Join a ranger to find out! This program is designed for younger children, but will still be informative for anyone. Join us at the Hwy 221 Access Visitor Center at 2 pm. (336) 982-2587
