 Come just to listen or to dance to the blue grass and old time musicians who play every Tuesday and Saturday beginning at 7p. Admission is $4. The Jubilee is located on North Main Street, across from the Courthouse.

River Rock Grill
Music on the Porch
 Spring through fall, the River Rock Grill hosts Live Music on the Porch beginning at 7p each Wednesday. The Porch is host to a variety of musical genres: country, folk, Appalachian, etc. Call 336-372-2694 to find out who's playing.

 Barns and other buildings around the county display squares illustrating quilt patterns and add interest to a driving tour of the countryside. Drop by Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center for a brochure. We are in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.
 Brochures for three driving loops of the Alleghany country-side are available at the Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center. Each loop is about a leisurely hour's drive and includes information on historic points along the way. The Chamber office is in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.
The Museum is Closed for the month of March.
Be sure to visit when planning a trip this Spring or Summer. Open Thursday through Saturday, 10a to 5p. There's never an admission charge. Stop by to experience local history and to see the new displays, 7 North Main Street, Sparta.
Veterans' Morning Coffee & Breakfast
at the VFW
The VFW hosts an informal full breakfast including, biscuits, gravy, eggs, bacon, sausage, grits, and coffee just for veterans every Wednesday from 8:30-11a. Click to learn more.
The VFW Military Museum is open to the public, 10a-2p, every Wednesday and Saturday in the basement of the VFW Post 7034, 1193 Us Highway 21 S, Sparta, NC. Admission is free.

Prom Dress Consignment Sale

The Alleghany High School EC class is hosting a Prom and Homecoming dress sale. Bring dresses and accessories to AHS EC class 103 during the week of March 17-21 (Mon-Fri) from 2:30p until 4p for registration. Dresses need to be clean and on a hanger. Pay only $5 to enter each dress in the sale. YOU price your dress and items. If your dress sells, an additional $5 commission fee will be deducted from the sale and the remainder goes to you in CASH! The Sale will take place on Saturday, March 22 from 10a-5p. Everyone who comes to the Prom Dress Closet on Saturday will be entered into a drawing for cool Prom Stuff. Barter Theatre to perform at Alleghany Community Auditorium
 Make plans for your family to attend the Friday, March 21, performance of Little House on the Prairie at 7pm in the Alleghany Community Auditorium. The Barter Players come from Abingdon, Virginia. Admission is free, but a $5 donation is suggested for adults. Children and adults will thoroughly enjoy this heartwarming performance based on the well known Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House series.
The Players are a traveling group of the Barter Theatre. They were created to tour about the region, and spark young people's interest in the theatrical arts. According to the Barter Theatre website, "The troupe presents high-energy and original productions that capture the imagination of today's youth while providing the best in the classic literature and beloved story adaptations." (Come see Annie Simpson (pictured above) playing the leading role of Laura Ingalls Wilder March 21.)

Bloodmobile to Visit, March 24
The Red Cross Bloodmobile, sponsored by the Sparta Lions Club, will make a collection visit on Monday, March 24, from 9:30 AM until 2:00 PM at the Sparta United Methodist Church. Everyone who is able to donate is urged to respond as the blood supplies are low. Several collection visits had to be cancelled due to the winter weather and, in addition, needs are greater due to natural disasters. Alleghany 4-H Plant Sale
Alleghany 4-H Club is holding their annual plant sale. Proceeds from the sale benefit the 4-H youth to provide scholarships to attend summer camps and retreats. Numerous plants are being sold including strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, herbs, and various vegetables. Orders for blueberry plants must be turned in by March 27. All other orders must be in by April 7. For plant descriptions and order forms call the Extension Office at 336-372-5597 or visit the website at alleghany4h.blogspot.com. Tentative pickup dates will be April 1 & 2 for Blueberries and April 15-16 for all others.

Rampin' Up!
The North Carolina Operation In As Much is now taking referrals for wheelchair ramps. The program assists those in need of ramps by sending ramp builders to their home. If you know of a need for a wheelchair ramp call, 877-506-2226 and a specialist will walk you through the referral process. April 26 is Rampin' Up day for North Carolina and builders in our area are prepared to help those in need. Visit the website for more information on how to get involved with this program.

WEDNESDAY, March 19
Everyone is invited to the Annual Quilt Show presented by the Alleghany Quilters Guild from March 12 to April 15, 2014.The show will be in the Blue Ridge Business Development Center, Atrium Gallery at 115 Atwood Street in Sparta. The exhibit is FREE. Visit with quilters on Wednesdays from 11:30a until 2p.
United States Senator Richard Burr is sending field representative Mike Fenley to Sparta for a series of constituent meetings. The idea is to facilitate contact with the Senator's staff in areas without a fulltime Congressional office. He will be available to meet with constituents on Wednesday, March 19th.
Meeting will be held at the County Office Building in Sparta. Individuals can make appointments by calling (336) 251-8156.
THURSDAY, March 20
Sparta Presbyterian Church is hosting yoga classes on Thursday evenings at 7:15. There is a $5.00 per session cost. Enter from the parking lot on Jones Street. All are welcome. 336-372-5045.
FRIDAY, March 21
Meet at the New River State Park's 221 Access Visitor Center at 7p for a Night Hike. Discover the many sound and wonders of the night while on an approximately 1.5 mile hike that will take place on easy to moderate trails. SATURDAY, March 22
Don't flush those medications! The Sparta Police Department will help to properly and safely dispose of medications. If you have out of date or unused medicines at home, please join the Sparta Police Department for the annual Medicine Drop at Sparta Town Hall 9a-1p.
 Meet at the Visitor Center of New River State Park at 6p for a presentation about Frogs. Attendees will learn about the anatomy of frogs, how they breathe, reproduce and more. Following the presentation, there will be a nature hike in hopes of encountering some of the frog and toad species of New River. 336-982-2587. MONDAY, March 24 Studio Redwood will offer Adult Art classes every other Monday evening, beginning January 13th through March 24th at 16 S Main Street. Come and enjoy this creative class.
