 Come just to listen or to dance to the blue grass and old time musicians who play every Tuesday and Saturday beginning at 7p. Admission is $4. The Jubilee is located on North Main Street, across from the Courthouse.

 Local blue grass and old time musicians jam each Monday, 2 blocks north of the Courthouse at the Crouse House in Crouse Park, beginning at 6p. Come and play or just listen. No charge, but a donation is appreciated. 336-372-5473
River Rock Grill
Music on the Porch
 Spring through fall, the River Rock Grill hosts Live Music on the Porch beginning at 7p each Wednesday. The Porch is host to a variety of musical genres: country, folk, Appalachian, etc. Call 336-372-2694 to find out who's playing.
GREAT ACTIVITIES TO DO ANYTIME
 Barns and other buildings around the county display squares illustrating quilt patterns and add interest to a driving tour of the countryside. Drop by Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center for a brochure. We are in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.
 Brochures for three driving loops of the Alleghany country-side are available at the Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center. Each loop is about a leisurely hour's drive and includes information on historic points along the way. The Chamber office is in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.
The Museum is Closed for the month of February. Be sure to visit when planning a trip this Spring or Summer. Open Thursday through Saturday, 10a to 5p. There's never an admission charge. Stop by to experience local history and to see the new displays, 7 North Main Street, Sparta.
Veterans' Morning Coffee & Breakfast
at the VFW
The VFW hosts an informal full breakfast including, biscuits, gravy, eggs, bacon, sausage, grits, and coffee just for veterans every Wednesday from 8:30-11a. Click to learn more.
The VFW Military Museum is open to the public, 10a-2p, every Wednesday and Saturday in the basement of the VFW Post 7034, 1193 Us Highway 21 S, Sparta, NC. Admission is free.

New Member Update: Jackson Hewitt Tax Service &

The Alleghany Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce 2 new members. Jackson Hewitt recently opened 2 new offices in Alleghany. The first office is located at 334 N Main Street, across the street from the Alleghany Inn. The second office is located in the Trojan Village Shopping Center at 665 N Main Street on the second floor. The tax professionals at Jackson Hewitt are available for assistance in filing your taxes. Understanding the Health Insurance Marketplace

The Alleghany Memorial Hospital will be hosting a NC Certified Community Healthcare Navigator on March 11. The Navigator will be onsite to present an overview of the Health Insurance Marketplace and will answer any questions. There will be 2 sessions, the first from 1p-3p and the second at 5p-7p.

Volunteer Fair Lunch n' Learn
 Any and all non-profit organizations that are in need of Volunteer services are encouraged to attend this session. Tuesday, March 11, there will be an informational session about Alleghany's First Annual Volunteer Fair. This program is to inform the community about the fair and to encourage participation from local non-profit organizations. The session will begin at 12noon. Rampin' Up!
The North Carolina Operation In As Much is now taking referrals for wheelchair ramps. The program assists those in need of ramps by sending ramp builders to their home. If you know of a need for a wheelchair ramp call, 877-506-2226 and a specialist will walk you through the referral process. April 26 is Rampin' Up day for North Carolina and builders in our area are prepared to help those in need. Visit the website for more information on how to get involved with this program.

Free Tax Preparation at the Library
The Alleghany County Library VITA site for FREE tax preparation began Saturday, February 1, 2014 and will run through April 9, 2014. If you are interested in getting free help for your taxes, please contact the library at dbrewer@nwrl.org or at 336-372-5573 to set up an appointment or for more information. The site is open on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10a til 4p.

Affordable Care Act
Legal Aid of North Carolina will be in Sparta to help navigate and enroll in the Health Insurance Marketplace. They will be taking appointments at 855-733-3711 to assist people to sign up for the Affordable Care Act. The appointments are on March 13 from 10 am to 4 pm and will be in the Board Meeting Room at the County Administration Building, 348 South Main Street. For more information,

THURSDAY, March 6
Sparta Presbyterian Church is hosting yoga classes on Thursday evenings at 7:15. There is a $5.00 per session cost. Enter from the parking lot on Jones Street. All are welcome. 336-372-5045.
FRIDAY, March 7
Meet at the New River State Park Wagoner Access Contact Station at 7p for a Night Hike. Discover the many sounds and wonders of the night while hiking approximately 1.5 miles.
SATURDAY, March 8
Meet at New River State Park's 221 Access Visitor Center at 10a for a presentation on fungi. Ever wonder what those colorful, unique looking populations are on the forest floor or on trees? Come to a program that will inform us about the "fungus among us".
Meet at the US Hwy 221 Visitor Center at 6:30p for a presentation and short hike about local owl species. The presentation will be about 30 minutes and will reveal many truths about owls. Following the presentation, there will be a short hike where we will try to call owls in hopes of observing some of New River's owls.
SUNDAY, March 9
The public is invited to join the Sparta United Methodist Church for the 11 a.m. worship and remain after the service for the Second Sunday Mission Meal in the church fellowship hall. There is no charge for the meal, but donations are gladly accepted. Donations go to a mission cause.
M eet at New River State Park's Visitor Center at Hwy 221 access for a short slide show and then the main attraction. Program starts at 6:30. Be prepared to spend at least 20 minutes outside in the cold air and dark skies. Learn how to identify the American Woodcock, its life history and some cool facts about this unique woodland shore bird that is rarely seen.
