Come just to listen or to dance to the blue grass and old time musicians who play every  Tuesday and Saturday beginning at 7p. Admission  is $4. The Jubilee is located on North Main Street, across from the Courthouse.

River Rock Grill 
Music on the Porch
Spring through fall, the River Rock Grill hosts Live Music on the Porch beginning at 7p each Wednesday. The Porch is host to a variety of musical genres: country, folk, Appalachian, etc. Call 336-372-2694 to find out who's playing.

Barn Quilt Trails 
Barns and other buildings around the county display squares illustrating quilt patterns and add interest to a driving tour of the countryside. Drop by Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center for a brochure. We are in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.

 

Driving Loops
Brochures for three driving loops of the Alleghany country-side are available at the Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center. Each loop is about a leisurely hour's drive and includes information on historic points along the way. The Chamber office is in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.
The Museum is Closed for the month of February. Be sure to visit when planning a trip this Spring or Summer. Open Thursday through Saturday, 10a to 5p. There's never an admission charge. Stop by to experience local history and to see the new displays, 7 North Main Street, Sparta.

 

Veterans' Morning Coffee & Breakfast
 at the VFW
The VFW hosts an informal full breakfast including, biscuits, gravy, eggs, bacon, sausage, grits, and coffee just for veterans every Wednesday from 8:30-11a. Click to learn more.
 
The VFW Military Museum is open to the public, 10a-2p, every Wednesday and Saturday in the basement of the VFW Post 7034, 1193 Us Highway 21 S, Sparta, NC. Admission is free.

Chamber Report on Christmas Gift Certificate Redemption

The Alleghany Chamber of Commerce sold more gift certificates this past Christmas season than ever. Over $13,000 gift certificates were sold and just over $12,000 have been redeemed. For those that received gift certificates, don't forget to use them! Use them on your lunch break at your favorite local restaurant or use them to get your oil changed or even pay for heating fuel during these cold snaps! Over 100 local businesses accept these certificates. Need a gift for someone? Come by the Chamber office, we provide gift certificates year round, not just during Christmas season. Alleghany & Ashe Community Choirs to Perform

You are invited to another wonderful Black History program on Thursday, February 27 @ 7:00 p.m. at the Alleghany County Library. Diane Bryan-Keeper has arranged for choirs from Ashe and Alleghany Counties to perform past and present day Spirituals, Hymns and Gospel Songs. Please help us get the word out by sharing with your friends. This performance is FREE of charge and is sponsored by the Alleghany Arts Council. 336-372-5597

Free Tax Preparation at the Library

 

The Alleghany County Library VITA site for FREE tax preparation began Saturday, February 1, 2014 and will run through April 9, 2014. If you are interested in getting free help for your taxes, please contact the library at dbrewer@nwrl.org or at 336-372-5573 to set up an appointment or for more information. The site is open on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10a til 4p. 
Special Olympics Polar Plunge

 The Alleghany County Special Olympics sponsors the 2nd Annual Polar Plunge in Alleghany County. This event is to raise funds to support persons who have intellectual disabilities and provide opportunities for them to live their lives to the fullest potential. The Plunge will be March 1stThe Alleghany Chamber of Commerce will be supporting this event as the Executive Director, Ashley, will be raising money to take the plunge. Individual plungers are asked to raise a minimum of $50. If you would like to donate, but don't want to plunge, come by the Chamber and place your donation in Ashley's box. Registration forms are available at the Chamber of Commerce office for those that would like to participate. Country Comfort Homes of Sparta, NC is excited to announce they will be exhibiting their products at the Southern Spring Home & Garden Show in Charlotte, February 28 - March 2. They will be showing three great products, with a main focus on the Classic Metal Roofing Systems aluminum shake shingle roof. Upcoming Free Business Class Offered at WCC
Affordable Care Act

Legal Aid of North Carolina will be in Sparta to help navigate and enroll in the Health Insurance Marketplace. They will be taking appointments at 855-733-3711 to assist people to sign up for the Affordable Care Act.  The appointments are on March 13 from 10 am to 4 pm and will be in the Board Meeting Room at the County Administration Building, 348 South Main Street.
