Come just to listen or to dance to the blue grass and old time musicians who play every  Tuesday and Saturday beginning at 7p. Admission  is $4. The Jubilee is located on North Main Street, across from the Courthouse.

River Rock Grill 
Music on the Porch
Spring through fall, the River Rock Grill hosts Live Music on the Porch beginning at 7p each Wednesday. The Porch is host to a variety of musical genres: country, folk, Appalachian, etc. Call 336-372-2694 to find out who's playing.

Barn Quilt Trails 
Barns and other buildings around the county display squares illustrating quilt patterns and add interest to a driving tour of the countryside. Drop by Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center for a brochure. We are in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.

 

Driving Loops
Brochures for three driving loops of the Alleghany country-side are available at the Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center. Each loop is about a leisurely hour's drive and includes information on historic points along the way. The Chamber office is in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.
The Museum is Closed for the month of February. Be sure to visit when planning a trip this Spring or Summer. Open Thursday through Saturday, 10a to 5p. There's never an admission charge. Stop by to experience local history and to see the new displays, 7 North Main Street, Sparta.

 

Veterans' Morning Coffee & Breakfast
 at the VFW
The VFW hosts an informal full breakfast including, biscuits, gravy, eggs, bacon, sausage, grits, and coffee just for veterans every Wednesday from 8:30-11a. Click to learn more.
 
The VFW Military Museum is open to the public, 10a-2p, every Wednesday and Saturday in the basement of the VFW Post 7034, 1193 Us Highway 21 S, Sparta, NC. Admission is free.

Library Celebrates Heart Month

The Alleghany County Library will honor Alleghany sweethearts 2 ways this month

If you have a special romantic story about you and your loved one to share, write it up and enter it in our "Sweetheat Stories" contest. Also, if you know a local couple who have been married for 25 years or more submit them for the Alleghany Sweethearts contest. Paint Couture at Studio Redwood

Saturday, Feb. 22, from 9a to Noon, Studio Redwood will be hosting Paint Couture, a Furniture Finish Class. No experience is necessary. Take home 4 beautiful finished samples. $69 with all supplies furnished.

Paint Couture class offers paint, glazes, metallics and shellacs, all are available at Studio Redwood at 16 S. Main, Sparta, NC.

Free Tax Preparation at the Library

 

The Alleghany County Library VITA site for FREE tax preparation began Saturday, February 1, 2014 and will run through April 9, 2014. If you are interested in getting free help for your taxes, please contact the library at dbrewer@nwrl.org or at 336-372-5573 to set up an appointment or for more information. The site is open on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10a til 4p.

Country Comfort Homes to participate in Southern Home Show

Country Comfort Homes of Sparta, NC is excited to announce they will be exhibiting their products at the Southern Spring Home & Garden Show in Charlotte, February 21 - 23 and February 28 - March 2. They will be showing three great products, with a main focus on the Classic Metal Roofing Systems aluminum shake shingle roof. Following the show, they will have a display of the new roofing system at Blevins Building Supply in Sparta. Special Olympics Polar Plunge

 The Alleghany County Special Olympics sponsors the 2nd Annual Polar Plunge in Alleghany County. This event is to raise funds to support persons who have intellectual disabilities and provide opportunities for them to live their lives to the fullest potential. The Plunge will be March 1stThe Alleghany Chamber of Commerce will be supporting this event as the Executive Director, Ashley, will be raising money to take the plunge. Individual plungers are asked to raise a minimum of $50. If you would like to donate, but don't want to plunge, come by the Chamber and place your donation in Ashley's box. Registration forms are available at the Chamber of Commerce office for those that would like to participate. Adopt a new Pet Today!

The Alleghany 

Animal Shelter is managed by Twin Oaks Veterinary Hospital in Sparta, NC. The shelter receives unwanted dogs, cats, kittens, and puppies dropped off by residents of 

Alleghany County. The shelter also receives stray animals collected by the dog catcher. Adopting a pet is quick and easy! The adoption fee is $15 plus the cost of a rabies shot (for animals over 6 months of age). If an animal has received a parvo shot, this cost is also added to the adoption fee (mostly for puppies). Sparta Presbyterian Church is hosting yoga classes on Thursday evenings at 7:15. There is a $5.00 per session cost. Enter from the parking lot on Jones Street. All are welcome. 336-372-5045.

Stop by the B Loop Washhouse at the Stone Mountain State Park campground to learn about the mammals that call Stone Mountain home. Starts at: 11:00am.  For more info, call 336-957-8185.
 
Meet at New River State Park's Visitor Center at Hwy 221 access for a presentation on the American Woodcock. Program starts at 5:30p. Be prepared to spend at least 20 minutes outside in the cold air and dark skies. Call the park office for more information. 336-982-2587. 
 
SUNDAY, February 23
 
Join a ranger for a short hike to 'Beauty Falls'. Along the way we will be discussing local flora and fauna. Wear shoes for hiking. Hike will last about 1 1/2 hours. Meet at 1p in Lower Lot Trailhead of Stone Mountain State Park. For more information, contact the park at 336-957-8185.
