 Come just to listen or to dance to the blue grass and old time musicians who play every Tuesday and Saturday beginning at 7p. Admission is $4. The Jubilee is located on North Main Street, across from the Courthouse.

 Local blue grass and old time musicians jam each Monday, 2 blocks north of the Courthouse at the Crouse House in Crouse Park, beginning at 6p. Come and play or just listen. No charge, but a donation is appreciated. 336-372-5473
River Rock Grill
Music on the Porch
 Spring through fall, the River Rock Grill hosts Live Music on the Porch beginning at 7p each Wednesday. The Porch is host to a variety of musical genres: country, folk, Appalachian, etc. Call 336-372-2694 to find out who's playing.
GREAT ACTIVITIES TO DO ANYTIME
 Barns and other buildings around the county display squares illustrating quilt patterns and add interest to a driving tour of the countryside. Drop by Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center for a brochure. We are in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.
 Brochures for three driving loops of the Alleghany country-side are available at the Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center. Each loop is about a leisurely hour's drive and includes information on historic points along the way. The Chamber office is in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.
The Museum is Closed for the month of February. Be sure to visit when planning a trip this Spring or Summer. Open Thursday through Saturday, 10a to 5p. There's never an admission charge. Stop by to experience local history and to see the new displays, 7 North Main Street, Sparta.
Veterans' Morning Coffee & Breakfast
at the VFW
The VFW hosts an informal full breakfast including, biscuits, gravy, eggs, bacon, sausage, grits, and coffee just for veterans every Wednesday from 8:30-11a. Click to learn more.
The VFW Military Museum is open to the public, 10a-2p, every Wednesday and Saturday in the basement of the VFW Post 7034, 1193 Us Highway 21 S, Sparta, NC. Admission is free.

Library Celebrates Heart Month

The Alleghany County Library will honor Alleghany sweethearts 2 ways this month.
If you have a special romantic story about you and your loved one to share, write it up and enter it in our "Sweetheat Stories" contest. Also, if you know a local couple who have been married for 25 years or more submit them for the Alleghany Sweethearts contest. Valentine Art Party
Studio Redwood is hosting an Art Party on Friday, February 14 from 1-3p. Children in grades 6-8 are invited to attend and create a fun art project. Parents, with all this snow coming our way, by Friday you will be ready to get those kids out of the house for a while. The fee is $24 and includes all supplies and a snack. Please register by Wednesday at 4p, call Studio Redwood at 336-372-7111. Class space is limited. Studio Redwood is located at 16 S Main Street in Sparta.

Homespun, located in downtown Sparta across from the County Courthouse, will be having a scavenger hunt in their store. The contest lasts through February 15th. Look for hearts throughout the store. Find a peach colored hearts labeled "Txt me" and receive a $10 gift certificate or find a blue heart labeled "I love you" and get a $20 gift certificate.

Special Olympics Polar Plunge
The Alleghany County Special Olympics sponsors the 2nd Annual Polar Plunge in Alleghany County. This event is to raise funds to support persons who have intellectual disabilities and provide opportunities for them to live their lives to the fullest potential. The Plunge will be March 1st. The Alleghany Chamber of Commerce will be supporting this event as the Executive Director, Ashley, will be raising money to take the plunge. Individual plungers are asked to raise a minimum of $50. If you would like to donate, but don't want to plunge, come by the Chamber and place your donation in Ashley's box. Registration forms are available at the Chamber of Commerce office for those that would like to participate. Country Comfort Homes to participate in Southern Home Show
Country Comfort Homes of Sparta, NC is excited to announce they will be exhibiting their products at the Southern Spring Home & Garden Show in Charlotte, February 21 - 23 and February 28 - March 2. They will be showing three great products, with a main focus on the Classic Metal Roofing Systems aluminum shake shingle roof. Following the show, they will have a display of the new roofing system at Blevins Building Supply in Sparta. Adopt a new Pet Today!
The Alleghany
Animal Shelter is managed by Twin Oaks Veterinary Hospital in Sparta, NC. The shelter receives unwanted dogs, cats, kittens, and puppies dropped off by residents of
Alleghany County. The shelter also receives stray animals collected by the dog catcher. Adopting a pet is quick and easy! The adoption fee is $15 plus the cost of a rabies shot (for animals over 6 months of age). If an animal has received a parvo shot, this cost is also added to the adoption fee (mostly for puppies). SATURDAY, February 15
 Join a park ranger at Stone Mountain State Park for a hike on the newly dedicated TRACK trail. The TRACK trail is a portion of the Stone Mountain Loop Trail that has been identified as a great trail for a family. This program will last for about one hour. For more information, call 336-957-8185. Meet at the Lower Lot Trailhead at 1p. Meet at the Visitor Center at 2p for a nature hike discussing the local evergreen species of New River State Park and how they differ from the deciduous species. This will be approximately a one mile hike where we will learn to identify and understand the science behind these evergreen species. Call the park office for more information or directions to the park: 336-982-2587 SUNDAY, February 16 Meet with a Park Ranger to explore different types of wildlife. We will also be playing a game that relates to the environment. This program is geared for kids 4-14 years old. Meet at the Visitor Center at 9:30a . For more information, call 336-957-8185.
