Come just to listen or to dance to the blue grass and old time musicians who play every Tuesday and Saturday beginning at 7p. Admission is $4. The Jubilee is located on North Main Street, across from the Courthouse.

Local blue grass and old time musicians jam each Monday, 2 blocks north of the Courthouse at the Crouse House in Crouse Park, beginning at 6p. Come and play or just listen. No charge, but a donation is appreciated. 336-372-5473
River Rock Grill Music on the Porch
Spring through fall, the River Rock Grill hosts Live Music on the Porch beginning at 7p each Wednesday. The Porch is host to a variety of musical genres: country, folk, Appalachian, etc. Call 336-372-2694 to find out who's playing.
GREAT ACTIVITIES TO DO ANYTIME
Barns and other buildings around the county display squares illustrating quilt patterns and add interest to a driving tour of the countryside. Drop by Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center for a brochure. We are in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.
Brochures for three driving loops of the Alleghany country-side are available at the Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center. Each loop is about a leisurely hour's drive and includes information on historic points along the way. The Chamber office is in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.
Open Thursday through Saturday, 10a to 5p. There's never a any admission charge. Stop by to experience local history and to see the new displays, 7 North Main Street, Sparta.
Veterans' Morning Coffee at the VFW
The VFW hosts an informal coffee just for veterans every Wednesday from 8:30-11a. Click to learn more.
The VFW Military Museum is open to the public, 10a-2p, every Wednesday and Saturday in the basement of the VFW Post 7034, 1193 Us Highway 21 S, Sparta, NC. Admission is free.

Yoga with Luna
Sparta Presbyterian Church will begin a yoga class on Thursday, January 16 at 7:15p in the Fellowship Hall. The cost is $5 per session and attendees are asked to use the parking lot on Jones Street. For more information, call 336-372-5045.

 Come to the Alleghany County Library, Saturday, January 18 at 11a and join author and Emmy winning producer Georgann Eubanks, as she introduces Literary Trails of Eastern North Carolina, the latest addition to the Literary Trails series. Blue Ridge Women in Agriculture Meeting
 Alleghany Ladies in Agriculture (Cattleman's, Beekeepers, Master Gardeners, etc.), you are invited to attend the Blue Ridge Women In Agriculture Meeting and Meal on January 21 from 11:30a to 1p. A soup and sandwich luncheon will be provided as the Blue Ridge Women will present information on programs available to Alleghany residents. Special Olympics Polar Plunge Kickoff
The Alleghany County Special Olympics sponsors the 2nd Annual Polar Plunge in Alleghany County. It is not just an event--it's an experience that will become a winter tradition for hundreds of warm-hearted Plungers! Help us kick off this event to support persons who have intellectual disabilities and provide opportunities for them to live their lives to the fullest potential. Meet at the Alleghany Wellness Center, January 23 beginning at 5p to learn more about this fundraiser and to join this year's plunge on March 1st. Individual plungers are asked to raise a minimum of $50. Adopt a Pet from the local Animal Shelter
The Alleghany Animal Shelter is managed by Twin Oaks Veterinary Hospital in Sparta, NC. The shelter receives unwanted dogs, cats, kittens, and puppies dropped off by residents of Alleghany County. The shelter also receives stray animals collected by the dog catcher. Adopting a pet is quick and easy! The adoption fee is $15 plus the cost of a rabies shot (for animals over 6 months of age). If an animal has received a parvo shot, this cost is also added to the adoption fee (mostly for puppies). Click this link to view a list of all the pets currently up for adoption.  Meet a park ranger to learn to identify the animals that live along the New River, as well as in your own back yard, by the signs and tracks they leave behind. Meet at New River State Park's Wagoner Access at 1:00 pm. SUNDAY, January 19 Learn about Black Bears. Join a Park Ranger to learn about this often feared creature.
