Come just to listen or to dance to the blue grass and old time musicians who play every  Tuesday and Saturday beginning at 7p. Admission  is $4. The Jubilee is located on North Main Street, across from the Courthouse.

Music on the Porch
Spring through fall, the River Rock Grill hosts Live Music on the Porch beginning at 7p each Wednesday. The Porch is host to a variety of musical genres: country, folk, Appalachian, etc. Call 336-372-2694 to find out who's playing.

Barn Quilt Trails: 
Barns and other buildings around the county display squares illustrating quilt patterns and add interest to a driving tour of the countryside. Drop by Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center for a brochure. We are in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.

 

Driving Loops
Brochures for three driving loops of the Alleghany country-side are available at the Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center. Each loop is about a leisurely hour's drive and includes information on historic points along the way. The Chamber office is in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.
Open Thursday through Saturday, 10a to 5p. There's never a any admission charge. Stop by to experience local history and to see the new displays, 7 North Main Street, Sparta.

 

Veterans' Morning Coffee at the VFW
The VFW hosts an informal coffee just for veterans every Wednesday from 8:30-11a. Click to learn more.
 
The VFW Military Museum is open to the public, 10a-2p, every Wednesday and Saturday in the basement of the VFW Post 7034, 1193 Us Highway 21 S, Sparta, NC. Admission is free.

Two Opportunities to enjoy Live Music at Alleghany County Library
As part of the Hometown & Heritage Program, the Alleghany County Library will be hosting two nights of music. The Whitetop Mountaineers with Kilby Spencer will perform Thursday, November 14 beginning at 6:30p. On Tuesday, November 19,      Celtic Music with R.G Absher at 7pThis program is sponsored by the Alleghany County Arts Council with funding from the NC Arts Council, NC Dept of Cultural Resources and funding from the National Endowment for the Arts. For more information, call 336-372-5573.

This Friday, November 15, Jest Country will be performing at 5:30p at Buckaroo's Grill. Saturday, Hard Tymes will be playing live beginning at 5:30p. Genesis HealthCare Accepting Donations
Genesis HealthCare-Alleghany Center is accepting donations for a Care package for deployed military personnel through November 21. Food items, hygiene items and miscellaneous items are needed for the package which will go out the last week of November. Farms will Open this Weekend!

Visit one of these mountain Christmas tree farms to choose the tree to be your holiday centerpiece. Farm personnel are here to cut your tree, bale it for travel and help secure it to your vehicle. Amnesty Week at the Alleghany County Library 
Monday, November 18 - Saturday, November 23
The Alleghany County Library will hold Amnesty Week during the week of November 18-23. Bring canned items to the library to replace lost or damaged library materials or to pay any library fines. These items will be donated to the Alleghany Food Closet. 336-372-5573. 
From 11a to 2p, regional authors will be appearing for book signings at shops in Downtown Sparta. Over 18 authors will be at the following locations: Alleghany Historical Museum, Alleghany County Public Library, Becca's Backwoods Bean Coffeeshop, Books N' Friends, Centerview, Homespun, Imaging Specialists, Inc., Mangum-Cater on Main, Murphy's Mercantile, Ofelia's on Main, and Studio Redwood. Sparta Elementary School is hosting a Career Fair from 8:30a til 11:30a.  

 

SATURDAY, November 16
 
Join a New River State Park Ranger for a 1 mile walk to learn about Winter Weeds, at the Wagoner Access. Meet at the Contact Station at 1 pm and please wear appropriate shoes and cold weather clothing. 

  

SUNDAY, November 17
 
Join a ranger for a short hike to 'Beauty Falls'. Along the way we will be discussing local flora and fauna. Hike will last about an hour. Meet at: Upper Parking Lot of Stone Mountain State Park at 2p.

TUESDAY, November 19
Sparta Presbyterian Church is hosting yoga classes on
Tuesday evenings at 7:15. There is a $5.00 per session cost. Enter from the parking lot on Jones Street. All are welcome. 336-372-5045.
