Come just to listen or to dance to the blue grass and old time musicians who play every Tuesday and Saturday beginning at 7p. Admission is $4. The Jubilee is located on North Main Street, across from the Courthouse.

Local blue grass and old time musicians jam each Monday, 2 blocks north of the Courthouse at the Crouse House in Crouse Park, beginning at 6p. Come and play or just listen. No charge, but a donation is appreciated. 336-372-5473
River Rock Grill Music on the Porch
Spring through fall, the River Rock Grill hosts Live Music on the Porch beginning at 7p each Wednesday. The Porch is host to a variety of musical genres: country, folk, Appalachian, etc. Call 336-372-2694 to find out who's playing.

Barns and other buildings around the county display squares illustrating quilt patterns and add interest to a driving tour of the countryside. Drop by Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center for a brochure. We are in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.
Brochures for three driving loops of the Alleghany country-side are available at the Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center. Each loop is about a leisurely hour's drive and includes information on historic points along the way. The Chamber office is in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.
Open Thursday through Saturday, 10a to 5p. There's never a any admission charge. Stop by to experience local history and to see the new displays, 7 North Main Street, Sparta.
Veterans' Morning Coffee at the VFW
The VFW hosts an informal coffee just for veterans every Wednesday from 8:30-11a. Click to learn more.
The VFW Military Museum is open to the public, 10a-2p, every Wednesday and Saturday in the basement of the VFW Post 7034, 1193 Us Highway 21 S, Sparta, NC. Admission is free.

Annual Awards Banquet, November 1
Get Your Tickets this Week! 
The Chamber of Commerce Annual Awards Banquet is set for Friday, November 1 at Olde Beau. This year marks the 30th anniversary for the Chamber and we will be recognizing 18 members for their commitment to the Chamber for 30 years. Those include Alleghany Christmas Tree Association, Alleghany Homebuilders Association, Amano/Pioneer Eclipse, Bob Black, Blevins Building Supply, Ken Brady, Blue Ridge Electric, Tom Burgiss, Farmer's Hardware, First Citizens Bank, Halsey Drug, High Meadows Country Club, High Meadows Inn, Miles Companies, NAPCO, Faye Reeves, Skyline/Skybest, and Wilkes Community College. We will also recognize this year's award recipients, Skyline/Skybest Communications, A Touch of Grace, The Rotary Club of Alleghany and Vickie Scott. Make plans to join us for an evening of fun and fellowship. A 3-course meal will be served and a live auction will also be held. Tickets are on sale for $35 each at the Chamber office until October 28.

Economic Development Community Meeting, November 7
Last month, the Economic Development Planning Committee conducted surveys, interviews and focus groups which have proven to be invaluable in identifying and prioritizing the areas of interest that will be the focus as plans are made. Please mark your calendar to attend the Community Meeting on Thursday, November 7 at 7p in the Sparta Elementary School Cafeteria. Reading Discussion Group

The first 15 minutes is for meet and greet; bring a bag lunch. Alleghany Reads Themed Christmas Tree

The Alleghany County Friends of the Library are planning a Christmas tree for display in town during the Christmas season. The theme of the tree is 'Alleghany Reads'. If you would like to take a picture of your child, grandchild or someone else in your family reading to include on the tree, please bring a wallet sized picture to the library.

Volunteer Nominations Sought
The Alleghany County Chamber of Commerce is accepting nominations for the 2014 North Carolina Governor's Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service. Agencies, churches, fire departments - any organizations that depend upon volunteers - are encouraged to submit nominations. (Please note that previous Governor's Award recipients from within the past 10 years are ineligible.) Previous recipients, nomination forms, guidelines, tips on preparing an effective nomination, and other information are available at the Alleghany Chamber and at
www.CoolSparta.com/volunteer.
Completed nomination forms are due at the Chamber office no later than 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 6, 2013 (hard copies, please. No electronic submissions accepted). All nominees will be recognized at a local program. Ten will be presented Governor's Volunteer Service Awards. Those ten will be eligible to complete for one of 20 Medallion Awards presented later in a statewide presentation.

Trunk or Treat Event
Trunk or Treat is scheduled for Halloween evening from 5-7p at Crouse Park, with a costume contest a 6p. This year, we are still in need of participants for Oct. 31 to decorate a vehicle and hand out candy, or provide prizes for the contests or simply make a contribution towards the candy supply. Alleghany Schools Host Career Fairs
Looking for Individuals to Speak
Sparta Elementary school will be hosting a Career Fair for their students. The school is in need of individuals interested in sharing their knowledge on their career, education, interest, job outlook, etc. The Fair will take place on Friday, November 15 from 8:30a-11:30a at Sparta Elementary School. A Library & Historical Museum Fundraiser
Mystery Dinner Theater, November 1 & 2
'The Fourteenth Annual Genealogy Society Meeting: & Potluck Supper' a murder mystery by Vicky Town, will be presented on Friday, November 1 and Saturday, November 2 @ 6:30 p.m. at the VFW Hall. Tickets are on sale for $20 each at the Alleghany County Library for this murder mystery. The play will be performed by Alleghany Community Theatre (ACT). Funds will benefit the Northwestern Regional Library, of which the Alleghany County Library is a part, and the Alleghany Historical Museum. Please stop by the library and pick up your ticket(s) for this fun event!!
The library can use your help selling tickets. If you would like to help with this, come by the Alleghany County Library and pick up tickets to sell. The library also needs volunteers to help the evening of the events, as meal servers, to take up tickets at the door, etc. If you can volunteer, please come by the library or contact the library at 336-372-5573 or by email at dbrewer@nwrl.org.
