Come just to listen or to dance to the blue grass and old time musicians who play every Tuesday and Saturday beginning at 7p. Admission is $4. The Jubilee is located on North Main Street, across from the Courthouse.

Local blue grass and old time musicians jam each Monday, 2 blocks north of the Courthouse at the Crouse House in Crouse Park, beginning at 6p. Come and play or just listen. No charge, but a donation is appreciated. 336-372-5473
River Rock Grill Music on the Porch
Spring through fall, the River Rock Grill hosts Live Music on the Porch beginning at 7p each Wednesday. The Porch is host to a variety of musical genres: country, folk, Appalachian, etc. Call 336-372-2694 to find out who's playing.
GREAT ACTIVITIES TO DO ANYTIME
Barns and other buildings around the county display squares illustrating quilt patterns and add interest to a driving tour of the countryside. Drop by Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center for a brochure. We are in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.
Brochures for three driving loops of the Alleghany country-side are available at the Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center. Each loop is about a leisurely hour's drive and includes information on historic points along the way. The Chamber office is in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.
Open Thursday through Saturday, 10a to 5p. There's never a any admission charge. Stop by to experience local history and to see the new displays, 7 North Main Street, Sparta.
Veterans' Morning Coffee at the VFW
The VFW hosts an informal coffee just for veterans every Wednesday from 8:30-11a. Click to learn more.
The VFW Military Museum is open to the public, 10a-2p, every Wednesday and Saturday in the basement of the VFW Post 7034, 1193 Us Highway 21 S, Sparta, NC. Admission is free.

Annual Awards Banquet, November 1
Chamber Awards Announced 
The Chamber of Commerce Annual Awards Banquet is set for Friday, November 1 at Olde Beau. This year marks the 30 anniversary for the Chamber and we will be recognizing those members who have been with us through it all. In addition to recognizing those 30 year members, we will also be awarding two local businesses for their contributions to our community as well as one civic organization and one hard-working individual. Skyline/Skybest Communications will be awarded Corporate Business of the Year, Touch of Grace for Retail Business of the Year, Alleghany Rotary Club for Civic Service Award and Vickie Scott as Chamber Board Member of the Year. Make plans to join us for an evening of fun and fellowship. A 3-course meal will be served and a live auction will also be held. Tickets are on sale for $35 each at the Chamber office. Live Music at Buckaroo's Grille
Buckaroo's Grille in Piney Creek, will be hosting live music Friday, October 4 and Saturday, October 5 starting at 5:30 PM. Jest Country will be performing Friday night and Don Moseley on Saturday. Bring the family for a night of good home cooking and enjoy the cool evenings around the fire pit; feel free to roast a marshmallow or two. Buckaroo's will be extending their hours and will be open Wednesday - Saturday, 11a-8p and Sundays from 11a-3p. There is also a new seafood special offered on Fridays and Saturdays. 16th Annual Wine Tasting:
October 6 at Thistle Meadow
 Thistle Meadow Winery is hosting their 16th annual Wine Tasting on Sunday, October 6 from 12noon - 5p at 102 Thistle Meadow in Laurel Springs. Not only will there be wine tasting but 19 other vendors will be on hand, with crafts and food. A live band will be performing throughout the day and the Balloon Lady will be on site from 12-2p making animals, flowers and other items from balloons. The Laurel Springs Fire Department Auxillary will be selling concessions as well. $5 will get you a tasting glass for the entire event and if you don't want to keep the glass at the end of the day, return it and get your $5 back. 800-233-1505

Emergency Services Memorial

 The Alleghany Honor Guard is hosting a Memorial Ceremony on Sunday, October 6 at 5p in at the Alleghany Community Auditorium. The service is to honor the county's emergency services workers, now passed, who dedicated their lives in service of their community, county, state, and nation to protect and preserve lives and property. A field of flags will be open to visit on Sunday from 9a-4p.

Blessing of the Animals
On the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi, it is a tradition  going back many centuries to ask God's blessing for all our brother and sister creatures who bring us so much joy. Please join Pastor Benton on Sunday, October 6, at 3p at the Sparta Presbyterian Church (parking lot on Jones Street).
Bring your pets and join in a ceremony of thanksgiving for the priceless gift of their presence in our lives. Dogs must be leashed. Cats and other small critters must be contained in carriers. Birds should be in cages for their own safety. All are welcome. 336-372-5045.

Poetry and Poster Contest
WCC Students Encouraged to Enter 
Wilkes Community College is encouraging students to enter the National Career Development Association's Poetry and Poster Contest. This year's theme is "Charting the Course for our Second Century." Last year's first place winner in the Adult Student Category was Alleghany's own, Dustin Shaw. A brief article about Dustin and his writing was recently featured in the Yadkin Valley Living Magazine. Dialogue Matters, Story Harvesting
Join this discussion group, Monday October 7 at 11:15a, and explore story harvesting. Story harvest gatherings will provide an opportunity to write our own stories in a safe and supportive environment.
