Music on the Porch
Spring through fall, the River Rock Grill hosts Live Music on the Porch beginning at 7p each Wednesday. The Porch is host to a variety of musical genres: country, folk, Appalachian, etc. Call 336-372-2694 to find out who's playing.

Barn Quilt Trails: 
Barns and other buildings around the county display squares illustrating quilt patterns and add interest to a driving tour of the countryside. Drop by Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center for a brochure. We are in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.

 

Driving Loops
Brochures for three driving loops of the Alleghany country-side are available at the Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center. Each loop is about a leisurely hour's drive and includes information on historic points along the way. The Chamber office is in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.
Open Thursday through Saturday, 10a to 5p. There's never a any admission charge. Stop by to experience local history and to see the new displays, 7 North Main Street, Sparta.

 

Veterans' Morning Coffee at the VFW
The VFW hosts an informal coffee just for veterans every Wednesday from 8:30-11a. Click to learn more.
 
The VFW Military Museum is open to the public, 10a-2p, every Wednesday and Saturday in the basement of the VFW Post 7034, 1193 Us Highway 21 S, Sparta, NC. Admission is free.

Live Music at Buckaroo's Grille
Buckaroo's Grille in Piney Creek, will be hosting live music Friday, September 13 and Saturday, September 14 starting at 5:30 PM. Don Moseley will be performing Friday night and Jest Country on Saturday. Bring the family for a night of good home cooking and family entertainment.

BBQ Chicken Fundraiser 
This Saturday at 9 am, the VFW will be selling barbecue chicken hot off the cooker. For a whole chicken the cost is only $9, and half a chicken is $5. Get there early, they will sell out fast. The Post is located 1.1 miles from downtown Sparta.

Glade Creek VFD Mudsling     

Alleghany County Fairgrounds will be the home of this action-packed show, filled with excitement and loads of fun.  Registration will begin at 11 am with gates opening at 3pm.  The show starts at 5pm sharp! Admission will be $10 for each adult and children 12 & under free with paying adult. A portion of proceeds will go to Relay For Life and the 19 Arizona Firefighters memorial fund who were killed in actionCome hungry as several vendors will be selling concessions.  Plus, we'll be having cash drawings as well. For more information, contact Chief Higgins at 336.200.3714 or visit the website.

Western Piedmont Symphony 

Come out and enjoy this Community Performance of Time & Technology on Friday, September 20 at 7p in the Alleghany Community Auditorium. Tickets are now on sale at the Alleghany Library, the Chamber of Commerce office and the Posh Fox in Roaring Gap. Tickets range in price from $5 to $20 based on seating preference. This business is a new twist on an old pastime, reminiscent of the drive-ins' from the 50s and 60s. Mountain Top Curb Service is located at 1747 US Hwy 21 N in Sparta, adjacent to the Blue Ridge Opportunity Commission office at the top of Twin Oaks mountain. Owners Tommy & Barbara Edwards offer a variety of hot plates, hand patted burgers, BBQ, hot dogs, homemade fries, sandwiches, subs, salads and a great kids' menu. Beef, Goat, Sheep & Dairy Shows, September 17-21

The Alleghany Cattleman's Meeting and Youth Beef Show will be held September 17 at 5:30p at the Alleghany County Fairgrounds.The Alleghany Cooperative Extension office will be offering hamburgers & hot dogs. If you plan to attend the Cattleman's meeting, please RSVP by September 16 at 336-372-5597. There will be a sheep and goat show on September 18 at 6 p.m. and a dairy show will be September 21 at 12:30 p.m. at the Alleghany Fairgrounds. Run for God Sanctioned Event
2013 Mountain Heritage Festival Run

Join this Run for God on Sept. 21. The Blue Ridge Christian School is hosting the 2013 Mountain Heritage Run and they are looking for runners as well as sponsors. The proceeds from this event will benefit the scholarship fund at Blue Ridge Christian School. The Run for God program is a mission of Mitchell Hollis of Georgia. It is designed as a group program to help friends, families and strangers come together and learn how to grow together physically, mentally, and spiritually. Your tax deductible donations will help BRCS provide the much needed funds to provide the best spiritual and educational opportunities for the youth of Alleghany and surrounding communities. Donations of any amount are appreciated. Donors giving $100 or more will have their name printed on the runners' t-shirts. The Glade Creek Volunteer Fire Department will begin a Ham Radio Technician Class from 7:00-9:15p at their firehouse. The classes will take five weeks, meeting once per week, to complete. One week will be an on-site class to look at a ham radio installation.

Check out the semi-annual store-wide half price sale at Books 'N Friends Used Book Store. All proceeds go to help Alleghany Public Library build for the future.

The Alleghany Champion Lions Club will have a
 Rummage Sale at the Sparta Florist Parking Lot duringthe Mountain Heritage Festival on September 21, 2013. Donations are being accepted to help raise money for our Alleghany Champion Lions Club.
