Come just to listen or to dance to the blue grass and old time musicians who play every  Tuesday and Saturday beginning at 7p. Admission  is $4. The Jubilee is located on North Main Street, across from the Courthouse.

Spring through fall, the River Rock Grill hosts Live Music on the Porch beginning at 7p each Wednesday. The Porch is host to a variety of musical genres: country, folk, Appalachian, etc. Call 336-372-2694 to find out who's playing.

Barn Quilt Trails: 
Barns and other buildings around the county display squares illustrating quilt patterns and add interest to a driving tour of the countryside. Drop by Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center for a brochure. We are in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.

 

Driving Loops
Brochures for three driving loops of the Alleghany country-side are available at the Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center. Each loop is about a leisurely hour's drive and includes information on historic points along the way. The Chamber office is in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.
Open Thursday through Saturday, 10a to 5p. There's never a any admission charge. Stop by to experience local history and to see the new displays, 7 North Main Street, Sparta.

 

Veterans' Morning Coffee at the VFW
The VFW hosts an informal coffee just for veterans every Wednesday from 8:30-11a. Click to learn more.
 
The VFW Military Museum is open to the public, 10a-2p, every Wednesday and Saturday in the basement of the VFW Post 7034, 1193 Us Highway 21 S, Sparta, NC. Admission is free.

Fun-Filled Friday Night
Friday, August 30th, Alleghany is the place to be. A Cruise In is planned for Friday night at 5p in Downtown Sparta. Several stores are staying open late so come out and see some  classic cars and do a little shopping. Becca's Backwoods Bean Coffee Shop will be hosting their monthly wine tasting beginning at 6p. There will be plenty of live music offered as well.
Jest Country will be entertaining live at  Buckaroo's Grille in Piney Creek, starting at 5:30 PM. Saturday evening Don and Emily Moseley will be performing old and new country favorites. Bring out the family for a night of good home cooking and family entertainment.  Buckaroo's Grille is located at the intersection of Hwy 113 and 93 in Piney Creek, NC. 336-359-2825.  Also David Parsons will be performing at Nikola's Restaurant on US 21 in Roaring Gap at 6p on Friday. Beginning on September 1Nikola's is now open on Sundays from 1p-8p

Fight Hunger with Fried Pies 
Fried Pies, one of the more musically varied and long-
running area bands, steps onto the Crouse Park Stage Saturday, August 31, for a concert to benefit the Solid Rock Food Closet. Playing together since 1998, the band is composed of Dennis Shaw, Billy Gee, Don
Story, Mel Jones and Jody Call. They are slated to play at 6p. Attendees are asked to donate a non-perishable food item or make a monetary contribution in lieu of admission. The Solid Rock Food Closet is a ministry of the county ministerial association and is an active player in the fight against local hunger. This is the last chance to catch the Music in the Park series as this concert closes out the season. 
Labor Day Softball Tournament
Alleghany Chamber of Commerce presents the 1st Annual Labor Day Softball Classic in Sparta. This is a 2-day tournament that will take place Saturday, August 31 and Sunday, September 1. The first day is round robin play and the second day the top 6 teams will advance to a single elimination tournament. This tournament is limited to 10 teams with a 4 game guarantee and $275 per team. WCC - Alleghany Campus Course
MACHINING PROCESSES I 

The Alleghany Center of Wilkes Community College is recruiting students for a Machining course to be offered in Sparta.

The course will include: mathematical applications; electrical and electronics; motors and controls; manual milling and lathes; hydraulics and pneumatics; welding and CNC machines. This program prepares students for jobs that range in pay from $12-$25 an hour, depending on the company and the employee's skill level.  The class will be held on Tuesday nights from 6-9 p.m., beginning September 10. Michael Dees of Michael's Chair Caning Service, Galax, VA is returning to Studio Redwood, Inc., 16 S. Main, Sparta, NC to teach another wonderful Chair Caning Class!  Join us September 7th, 9:30 a. - 2 p. to learn the Centered Diamond Pattern.  Cost: $50, Supplies included.  There are a few items i.e. scissors, that you will want to bring from home.  Bring a chair with the damaged reeds removed.  Please call 336.372.7111.
