Come to listen or to dance to the blue grass and old time musicians who play on Tuesday beginning at 7p and Saturday at 7p and the first Friday of every month at 7p. Admission $4. The Jubilee is located on North Main Street, across from the Courthouse.

Local blue grass and old time musicians jam each Monday, 2 blocks north of the Courthouse at the Crouse House in Crouse Park, beginning at 6p. Come and play or just listen. No charge, but a donation is appreciated. 336-372-5473
GREAT ACTIVITIES TO DO ANYTIME
Barns and other structures throughout Alleghany County are adorned with normal squares illustrating quilt patterns and add interest to a driving tour of the countryside. Drop by Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center for a brochure. We are in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.
Brochures for three driving loops of the Alleghany countryside are available at the Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center. Each loop is about a leisurely hour's drive and includes information on historic points along the way. The Chamber office is in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.

Veterans' Morning Coffee at the VFW:
The VFW hosts an informal coffee just for veterans every Wednesday from 8:30-11a. Click to learn more.
The VFW Military Museum is open to the public, 10a-2p, every Wednesday and Saturday in the basement of the VFW Post 7034, 1193 Us Highway 21 S, Sparta, NC. Admission is free.

Independence celebration, fireworks and parade plans
Thursday, July 4th, a tailgating party kicks off the celebration of our country's independence at 5:30p at Alleghany High School. It includes music, food and games, followed by fireworks at dusk.
"Saluting the Price of Freedom" is the theme of Sparta's parade that will wind down Main Street Saturday, July 6, 2013, beginning at 2p. WWII vet Doc Evans is the parade marshal. Entries are encouraged. Pre-register by calling Barbara Lucier at 336-372-6135. There is no registration fee. Staging will begin in the NAPCO parking lot on Trojan Avenue at 1p. There's a $50 prize for the "Best Depiction of Theme" float and the "Most Original" float. Entries wishing to be judged for a possible prize MUST BE DECORATED AND IN LINE by 1:15p. Beginning at 6p that evening, the Groovin Band will perform at a free concert at Crouse Park. Bring a lawn chair or blanket to spread on the ground. Concessions available.

Harold Church Fundraiser
Spaghetti supper benefit
Harold Church, a friend to many in our community, is recovering from cancer and treatment. His cancer is in remission. A fundraising supper, Friday, June 21, 4:30-7p in the Alleghany High School Cafeteria is scheduled to help with considerable medical expenses not covered by insurance. Meals are $8 per plate. Take outs available. Contributions for "Helping Harold" may be sent to Sparta Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 474, Sparta NC 28675.

Music this weekend
Get your toe to tappin'
There are lots of places to enjoy music this weekend. This Saturday night Talk of the Town will be playing blue grass and country favorites for listening or dancing at the Alleghany Jubilee, across from the courthouse, beginning at 7p. Admission is only $4. There's music and dancing every Tuesday and Saturday nights and if you forget, Jubilee details are always in the column at the left. 336-372-4591
Donald Biggens kicks off Friday evening music Nikola's High Meadows Restaurant, 10498 Hwy. 21 South, Roaring Gap, beginning at 7p. Be entertained as you enjoy fine dining. Also, Nikolas is now open Monday evenings for dinner. 336-363-6060
Donny and Emily Moseley will be playing country favorites at Buckaroo's Grille at the intersection of NC 93 and 113 beginning at 6p on Friday. Due to a scheduling conflict, there will be no Saturday Music in Crouse Park this week, but the music returns June 29 with the Crouse House Pickers for a rare Saturday performance beginning at 6p.

Mud Sling on Saturday
The mud will be flying at the Alleghany County Fairgrounds Saturday, June 22, beginning at 5p. Sponsored by the Glade Creek Fire Department, Mud Sling admission is $10 adults; age 12 and under FREE. 336-657-3588.

Family Fun and Duck Race
The Shriners' big family fun day and duck race begins at noon at Una's River Bottom. There will be food, fun, games and a bounce house. Relay for Life
Survivors' Dinner
All cancer survivors (and a guest) are invited to Village Park for dinner at 5:30p, Saturday, June 29, as part of Relay for Life's celebration of the American Cancer Society's 100th birthday. "A Night Out With The Stars' is the evening's theme and everyone is encouraged to dress their best as they walk the red carpet. No matter where someone is in their battle, they are a SURVIVOR and to you we say "thank you" for inspiration and hope!
