Come to listen or to dance to the blue grass and old time musicians who play on Tuesday beginning at 7p and Saturday at 7p and the first Friday of every month at 7p. Admission $4. The Jubilee is located on North Main Street, across from the Courthouse.

Barn Quilt Trails: 
Barns and other structures throughout Alleghany County are adorned with normal squares illustrating quilt patterns and add interest to a driving tour of the countryside. Drop by Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center for a brochure. We are in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.

 

Driving Loops: 
Brochures for three driving loops of the Alleghany countryside are available at the Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center. Each loop is about a leisurely hour's drive and includes information on historic points along the way. The Chamber office is in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.
Open Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 10a to 5p. Stop by to experience local history and to see the new displays, 7 North Main Street, Sparta.

 

Veterans' Morning Coffee at the VFW:
The VFW hosts an informal coffee just for veterans every Wednesday from 8:30-11a. Click to learn more.
 
The VFW Military Museum is open to the public, 10a-2p, every Wednesday and Saturday in the basement of the VFW Post 7034, 1193 Us Highway 21 S, Sparta, NC. Admission is free.

Waiting for a Good Home
The following pets are available for adoption at the county shelter located at Twin Oaks Vets. They are submitted by Save-A-Pat, a non-profit that assists in placing stray animals and supporting spaying and neutering. They are as follows (top picture, proceeding clockwise) Toby is a very gentle blue-eyed husky mix. Rastus is a almost full grown lab mix puppy, with lots of energy. Sassy is a shy cocker spaniel mix who needs exercise to regain her girlish figure. D.J. Smith Special Event
Daniel Justin Smith will be at Studio Redwood, 16 South Main St., Sparta, on Saturday, May 4, beginning at 4:30p. Smith will present a concert for kids, followed by a performance of his own work and the unveiling of Chris Davis' new painting, inspired by Smith's song "Forever Rain." The public is invited to come and enjoy the program and meet this native son. The event is sponsored by the Alleghany Arts Council. 336-372-7111
Fill a bottle, help a baby
The Alleghany Pregnancy Center is holding it's Baby Bottle Campaign. Individuals and businesses are asked to take a bottle tagged by the Center between Mother's Day and Father's Day and fill it with loose change, dollars, whatever is an appropriate contribution. The money is put to work serving expectant families and families with newborns. Located next to First Baptist Church, the Center is open noon to 5p Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. The Big Dawg Returns
One more harbinger that spring has arrived is the opening of the Big Dawg, the oh-so-handy take out window at the River Rock Grill and Family Fun Center. When you are in too big a hurry to eat in, check the selection of Nathans famous all beef hot dogs, Lexington style bbq, and snow cones. Mustard Seed, Touch of Grace
invite you to new quarters
The old Smithey's Building has taken on a new look with the expansion of the Mustard Seed Cafe and Touch of Grace gifts, apparel and flowers into the space once occupied by Seasons. The Cafe has twice the seating and with an expanded kitchen will soon result in new menu items. Touch of Grace has room for more selection. If you haven't dropped by lately, come see for yourself
