Come to listen or to dance to the blue grass and old time musicians who play on Tuesday beginning at 7p and Saturday at 7p and the first Friday of every month at 7p. Admission $4. The Jubilee is located on North Main Street, across from the Courthouse.

Barn Quilt Trails: 
Barns and other structures throughout Alleghany County are adorned with normal squares illustrating quilt patterns and add interest to a driving tour of the countryside. Drop by Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center for a brochure. We are in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.
 
Driving Loops: 
Brochures for three driving loops of the Alleghany countryside are available at the Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center. Each loop is about a leisurely hour's drive and includes information on historic points along the way. The Chamber office is in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.
Open Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 10a to 5p. Stop by to experience local history and to see the new displays, 7 North Main Street, Sparta.
 
Veterans' Morning Coffee at the VFW:

Benefit supper at Piney Creek School
Piney Creek School is serving up a benefit spaghetti supper on Feb. 2 from 5 to 7p for Alvin, Anita and Aaron Brown whose home on Barr Road was destroyed by a fire. Advanced tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under. Tickets at the door are $10. Local musicians will perform in the gym from 4 to 8p. Questions: Call 336-359-2988.

John Locke VP to speak at GOP meeting
Becki Gray, Vice President for Outreach with the John Locke Foundation, is the featured speaker at the Feb. 7 dinner meeting of the Alleghany Republican Party. The title of her presentation is "Challenges and Opportunities for a New Governor and General Assembly." The John Locke Foundation is an influential conservative think tank based in Raleigh. Get FREE help with tax preparation
The Voluntary Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program at the Alleghany County Library is providing FREE tax preparation assistance through April 10 (with the exception of the week of March 25). If you are interested in getting free help for your taxes, please contact the library at dbrewer@nwrl.org or at 336-372-5573 to set up an appointment or for more information. Tax help is available on Wednesdays and Fridays from 10a til 4p. 
Art classes offer by Studio Redwood
Chris Davis at Studio Redwood is offering afterschool art classes for elementary school students, first through eighth grade on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and classes in watercolor and drawing for adults on Thursdays. Lunch 'N Learn about Backyard Birding
The Alleghany County Library will be hosting the first Lunch 'n Learn of 2013 on Thursday, February 7 at 12 noon.  Backyard Birding will be presented by Cecelia Mathis.  The Blue Ridge Discovery Center will sponsor the program.  There is no charge for attending this program and everyone is invited to attend.  Bring your lunch and dessert and drinks will be provided by the library.  Pre-registration  requested.  Call 336-372-5573 or email  dbrewer@nwrl.org to register or with questions.   In the event of questionable weather, contact the Alleghany County Library to confirm that the program will be held.

Get  in shape with Lighten-Up Program
Get back into a workout routine and drop those extra Holiday pounds. Alleghany Wellness Center's Lighten-Up Weight Loss Competition is back and better than ever!  During the six week competition, learn to work out efficiently, maintain a healthy diet, lose weight and feel better! Registration begins on February 11 and is $100.00.  Included are two weekly sessions with a personal trainer, one weekly session with a nutritionist and full use of AWCI facilities during the competition. The overall winner will take home $200.  Prizes will also be given to the 1st-Runner Up Female and 1st-Runner Up Male competitors. Rotary Draw Down tickets available
The Alleghany Rotary Club is holding its annual "Drawdown" fundraiser on May 4 at the Silver Dollar Music Park. Only 300 tickets will be sold. The final ticket drawn wins cash prize of $5000. Tickets are $100 apiece and includes dinner for two. Contact a local Rotarian and get your ticket before they are all sold. After expenses, all money raised goes to local charities and non-profits.
