Barn Quilt Trails: 
Barns and other structures throughout Alleghany County are adorned with normal squares illustrating quilt patterns and add interest to a driving tour of the countryside. Drop by Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center for a brochure. We are in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.
 
Driving Loops: 
Brochures for three driving loops of the Alleghany countryside are available at the Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center. Each loop is about a leisurely hour's drive and includes information on historic points along the way. The Chamber office is in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.

New Pot Of Gold winner! 
Jennica Rusk of Sparta was this week's winner of $30 in Chamber Gift Certificates for finding the Pot of Gold at Halsey Drug. The Pot has now been placed with a different merchant. Look for the sign to identify a participating merchant and then be the first lucky shopper to find the pot of gold each week. Simply point out the location of the pot of gold to a store employee and receive a winner token. Tokens can be redeemed at the Alleghany Chamber of Commerce for a $30 gift certificate to spend with Chamber merchants. This promotion is a partnership with the Sparta Revitalization Committee and the Chamber of Commerce and will continue for ten weeks until December 14. Only ten tokens will be given out so be on the lookout for the pot of gold! 
Calendar Meeting
Tuesday, November 20, the Chamber will be hosting a calendaring meeting for 2013. We are working on getting events in the Sparta Magazine and our master calendar for the community. Everyone with a planned event needs to come! It will begin at 5:30p in the Main Floor Conference Room of the old county office building next to Medi Home Care. Community Thanksgiving Service - Everyone invited
Join your friends and neighbors at Christ Episcopal Church this evening (Tuesday) at 6:30 p.m. for the community service of thanks. Light refreshment will follow. Christmas Parade, Saturday, November 24
This Saturday, don't miss the annual Christmas parade at 2p as it marches down Main Street. The theme is Festival of Trees and the Grand Marshall is the Honorable Judge Richard Doughton and of course Santa Claus is expected to make several appearances. He will be at Alleghany Jubilee from 12noon until 2p, then after his ride through town in the parade, he will return to the Courthouse lawn for more visits with the children. Homemade float entries are encouraged and there will be cash prizes awarded to the winners of the two categories, "Best Depiction of Theme" and "Most Original". There is no parade entry fee; however, participants are asked to pre-register by calling Barbara Lucier at 336-372-6135.
Festival of Trees      
A new Holiday treat this year! The Sparta Revitalization Committee is sponsoring a festival of trees on Main Street in Sparta, November 23 through December 30, in the rock building next to the Alleghany Chamber of Commerce. The trees have been donated by local tree growers and decorated by organizations and groups throughout the county. An open house will be held Friday, November 23 from 4-6p. After the Open House, the Festival of Trees will be open to the public, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 11a-1p and 3-5p. Admission is free; however, donations are appreciated.

Agate Hill to Appomattox
The vivid storytelling of Barbara Bates-Smith and the idyllic music of Jeff Sebens bring the Civil War to life in the Tuesday, Nov. 27, 6:30 p.m. presentation at the Alleghany Library. This is a one-woman play adapted by Bates-Smith from the works of famous authors. There is no charge to attend. 336-372-5573

Library Needs VITA Volunteers

The Alleghany Public Library is looking for volunteers to help prepare tax returns for 2012. The IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance programs or VITA, will train anyone interested in volunteering and training is offered both online and in a classroom setting. High Country Lights

High Country Lights will begin their 2012 season on Thanksgiving day at 6p. Over 100,000 lights will be on display and choreographed to sixty minutes of music. The Holiday light show is located at Glade Creek Fire Department in Ennice, just across the street from Glade Creek Elementary School. Santa will be visiting each Saturday night from 6-9p. The lights will be running every night, Sunday through Thursday from 6p-10p and Friday and Saturday from 6p-11p. Visit the website for information on all of the special events going on this season.
