Barn Quilt Trails: 
Barns and other structures throughout Alleghany County are adorned with normal squares illustrating quilt patterns and add interest to a driving tour of the countryside. Drop by Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center for a brochure. We are in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.
 
Driving Loops: 
Brochures for three driving loops of the Alleghany countryside are available at the Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center. Each loop is about a leisurely hour's drive and includes information on historic points along the way. The Chamber office is in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.

Pot Of Gold is Hidden!
Congratulations to the past Pot of Gold Winners!

This week the pot of gold has been hidden again. It is in a Chamber member retail shop in Sparta. Look for the sign to identify a participating merchant and then be the first lucky shopper to find the pot of gold each week. Simply point out the location of the pot of gold to a store employee and receive a winner token. Tokens can be redeemed at the Alleghany Chamber of Commerce for a $30 gift certificate to spend with Chamber merchants. This promotion is a partnership with the Sparta Revitalization Committee and the Chamber of Commerce and will continue for ten weeks until December 14. Only ten tokens will be given out so be on the lookout for the pot of gold! 
Book Fair and Santa at the Library
November 14 through the 20, The Alleghany County Library will be hosting a Book Fair during regular Library hours. All purchases will benefit the Library.  Thursday, November 15, the Library will be open late for Christmas shopping hours from 5:30-8p. Santa will be making a special visit from 5:30-6:30p, so kids can come and have their pictures made while letting Santa know what they want for Christmas. Stop by and get some great gifts for this holiday season and help out the Library at the same time.

Christmas at the Movies
Sparta United Methodist Church presents songs from you favorite movies including "White Christmas", It's a Charlie Brown Christmas", "The Grinch", "Meet Me in St Louis " and more. Saturday, November 17, the performance will begin at 4p. Performed by the SUMC Singers, Children's Church performers with guest Trumpeter, Alan Sears, pianist and directors, Jay and Cheri Galbraith. After the show, stay for the Annual Community Thanksgiving Dinner in the Fellowship Hall of the church. Donations are gratefully accepted.
Healing Hearts Program
High Country Health Care System sponsors a monthly series to promote healing from loss. The first life lesson series will be: Christmas, Bah Humbug: Managing the Holidays While You're Grieving on Monday, November 19 at the High Country Hospice Office. Financing Seminar
Wilkes Community College Small Business Center is holding a financing options seminar for small businesses. The seminar will be on Tuesday, November 20, from 6-8p at the Alleghany Campus of Wilkes Community College. Finding money for businesses is difficult in today's environment. However, there are more options available than ever before. If you are looking for another option check out the seminar. Community Thanksgiving Service
The Alleghany Ministerium's annual Thanksgiving service will be held on November 20, at 6:30p at Christ Church, located on Hwy 21S in Sparta. This year's service will feature readings and songs from the Blue Ridge Christian School; a musical offering by a blend of church choirs; and a Thanksgiving reflection from Reverend Bruce Benton. Please bring a monetary offering to support the Emergency Relief Fund; as well as canned goods and nonperishable items for the Solid Rock Food Closet. A festive reception hosted by Christ Church will follow the service. 336-372-7983 
Calendar Meeting
Tuesday, November 20, the Chamber will be hosting a calendaring meeting for 2013. We are working on getting events in the Sparta Magazine and our master calendar for the community. Everyone with a planned event needs to come! It will begin at 5:30p in the Main Floor Conference Room of the old county office building next to Medi Home Care. Festival of Trees      
A new Holiday treat this year! The Sparta Revitalization Committee is sponsoring a festival of trees on Main Street in Sparta, November 23 through December 30, in the rock building next to the Alleghany Chamber of Commerce. The trees have been donated by local tree growers and decorated by organizations and groups throughout the county. An open house will be held Friday, November 23 from 4-6p. After the Open House, the Festival of Trees will be open to the public, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 11a-1p and 3-5p. Admission is free; however, donations are appreciated. 
Chamber Showcase
The Alleghany Chamber of Commerce has a new member benefit, The Chamber Showcase. This is a show, aired on Alleghany Community Television and shown in 5 surrounding counties. Each month a new episode will air featuring 5 businesses and 5 sponsors. Ashley Weaver interviews each business owner in their store or business. A pilot episode is available to view, however this pilot only shows one business and does not include sponsors. The first show will air the week of Thanksgiving and run through December. We will be looking for more businesses to shoot every month, so let us know if you would like your business on TV! 
Deck the Halls

Alleghany Wellness Center is holding a Wreath and Garland Sale, and Thursday, November 15 is the deadline. They are offering a variety of wreaths and garland with proceeds going to the general operations fund and all programs at the Alleghany Wellness Center. Order forms are available at Alleghany Chamber of Commerce, River Rock Grill, Touch of Grace, the Library, Backwoods Bean Coffee Shop and Farmer's Hardware. Library Needs VITA Volunteers

The Alleghany Public Library is looking for volunteers to help prepare tax returns for 2012. The IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance programs or VITA, will train anyone interested in volunteering and training is offered both online and in a classroom setting.
