GREAT ACTIVITIES TO DO ANYTIME
Barns and other structures throughout Alleghany County are adorned with normal squares illustrating quilt patterns and add interest to a driving tour of the countryside. Drop by Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center for a brochure. We are in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.
Brochures for three driving loops of the Alleghany countryside are available at the Alleghany Chamber of Commerce and Visitors' Center. Each loop is about a leisurely hour's drive and includes information on historic points along the way. The Chamber office is in the rock building with the green awning (58 South Main Street, Sparta). Our foyer is always open and a brochure is always available.

Annual Halloween Trunk or Treat
Members of the Sparta Revitalization Committee will be making rounds this week for candy donations for Trunk or Treat. Crouse Park will be the location of the Trunk or Treat again this year which will take place on October 31 from 5-7p. Everyone is invited to take part in this event. Whether you decorate your trunk, donate candy or bring your little ones, please plan to attend. There will be costume contests and music.  Monthly Wine Tasting and Businesses Open Late
Friday, October 26, Backwoods Bean Coffee Shop will be hosting their monthly wine tasting. There is a $5 cover and tastings begin at 6p. They offer an extensive wine list, so stop by to see which ones will be featured this month.

 Last Chance for Music on the Deck This is the last weekend to join Harmony Hill Bed and Breakfast for music Friday and Saturday nights, 7-9p. Bring a lawn chair and come enjoy local talent and beautiful fall views. McRitchie Winery and Ciderworks will be at Harmony Hill Friday night to sell their wine. Little Windows performing at Sparta Presbyterian Church
Sunday, October 28, at 1:30p, c ome out and enjoy this FREE concert at the Sparta Presbyterian Church, Little Windows, with Mark Weems and Julee Glaub. This is a concert of traditional Irish and Appalachian songs and tunes. Donations of personal and household items will be received for the Solid Rock Food Pantry. Items needed are: toothpaste, deodorant, toilet tissue, shampoo, detergent, dish detergent, paper towels, Pampers, etc. For more information, call 336-372-5045.

Pot Of Gold is Hidden!

Congratulations to last week's, Pot Of Gold Winner! This week the pot of gold has been hidden again. It is in a Chamber member retail shop in Sparta. Look for the sign to identify a participating merchant and then be the first lucky shopper to find the pot of gold each week. Simply point out the location of the pot of gold to a store employee and receive a winner token. Tokens can be redeemed at the Alleghany Chamber of Commerce for a $30 gift certificate to spend with Chamber merchants. This promotion is a partnership with the Sparta Revitalization Committee and the Chamber of Commerce and will continue for ten weeks until December 14. Only ten tokens will be given out so be on the lookout for the pot of gold!

ReadFest
Join the Alleghany Library for ReadFest on Monday, October 29. From 1-4p, local and area authors will be at the Library signing copies of their books. Plan to come meet the authors and possibly purchase a signed copy of a book for a Christmas gift!

Weatherization Works
The Blue Ridge Opportunity Commission, Inc., (BROC) is inviting the public to join the BROC Weatherization Staff during a demonstration of the Weatherization Assistance Program made possible by the funding of the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act. Weatherization can save homeowners and renters hundreds of dollars in utility bills as well as providing safer environments. Refreshments will be served. The demonstration will begin at 9a on Tuesday, October 30 at 153 Sunset Drive in Sparta. Turn off S. Main Street by Lowes Foods, located at the third house on the left. 336-667-7174.

Halloween at the Library
The Alleghany Library will be hosting "Halloween Fun for Everyone". The Library invites everyone, the young and the young-at-heart to stop by the Library on October 31 in costume to receive a bag of candy. One bag of candy, per person, in costume, during regular business hours, 8:30a-5:30p. Bring your library card or pick up your first library card for an extra treat. 336-372-5573.

2012 Awards Banquet
This year's banquet on November 2,at Olde Beau, beginning at 6:30p, will be honoring Food Lion, Rob Mangum, and the Solid Rock Food Closet at Olde Beau. Tickets are $35, so stop by the Chamber before October 26 to purchase a ticket. Please plan to attend in support of the honorees.The dinner offers a double entree of petite sirloin and honey glazed salmon. Following the presentation will be a brief auction. Live auction items include pottery from Cater Pots of Sparta and Grim Pottery of Damascus, VA; four hot chocolate mugs and basket from Phyllis Haile of Roaring Gap; a silver-wrapped tigers eye pendant from Blue Ridge Gallery of Fine Art of Sparta; a framed beveled mirror from Devin Ulery of Designs in Wood of Sparta; a large cutting board from John Brady of Blue Ridge Woodcrafters of Sparta; an original pen portrait of Doc Watson by Jarrod Shaw, framed and donated by Ray Shaw of Shaw Fine Woodworking in Whitehead; a June Furlow "Alleghany County NC" print, framed and donated by Stewart Royall of Studio Roxie of Sparta; a four-piece place setting of handmade Christmas placemats and napkins by Delta Peterson of Delta's Goodies of Sparta; and two wooden honey dippers from Jay Collins of One Good Turn of Sparta. 336-372-5473
