WEEKLY NEWSLETTER
Black History Month

For Black History Month we would like to give tribute to some of the great Detroiters, both past and present, who've worked hard to improved the quality of life for their city. Detroit's greatest asset is its people; and each week in February we'll acknowledge people who were called to make a difference in the lives of those around them; paving the path toward an improved Detroit for the future.

Erma Henderson
First African American Detroit City Councilwoman.

Born in Pensacola, Florida in 1917, at the age of one Erma and her family moved to Detroit with hopes of a better life in the North. Later in life, Erma earned her master's degree in social work from Wayne State University. Her enthusiasm for politics was evident and she developed a gift for gaining peoples support. After years of success using her gifts and knowledge to help other African Americans gain political seats, she decided to use her skills and experience to run for City Council in 1972. After becoming a City Council member in 1972, she later became the President of City Council in 1977 and again in 1981. She fought for African American and women's rights until she passed away at the age of 92 in 2009.
