Black History Month
For Black History Month we would like to give tribute to some of the great Detroiters, both past and present, who've worked hard to improved the quality of life for their city.
Detroit's greatest asset is its people; and each week in February we'll acknowledge people who were called to make a difference in the lives of those around them; paving the path toward an improved Detroit for the future.

Mark Covington,
Chairman of Georgia Street Community Collective.
Some things can be blessing in disguise! After losing his job Mark moved back into the house he grew up in on Georgia St. on the east side. He soon noticed that people weren't taking care of the neighborhood like they did when he was growing up, so he decided to clean some vacant lots himself. Soon after, a few kids joined in to help. Over time, those kids brought more kids and things grew from there. In 2008 Mark got a group of people together and created the Georgia Street Community Collective, which now has a building, plants community gardens and hosts a number of other great programs for youth in the area. There must be a lot of kids in the neighborhood that are happy Mark moved back to Georgia Street.
