John Ferriter was a career Foreign Service Officer in the US Department of State from 1964 to 1989. He served in a number of foreign counties, most particularly in Zaire as Deputy Chief of Mission and in Djibouti as US Ambassador. In Washington, as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Energy, he was closely involved in the international deliberations related to global climate change. He participated in the early negotiations culminating in the establishment of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
In 1989 Ambassador Ferriter left the State Department to join the International Energy Agency (IEA) in Paris as the Deputy Executive Director. The 29 member country organization was created in 1974 in response to the oil embargo actions of OPEC. Its main objective is to promote the energy security of its members by ensuring access to reliable and ample supplies of energy and by maintaining effective emergency response capabilities. Climate change is also a core concern of the Agency since 70% of greenhouse gas emissions result from energy production and use. The IEA provides the UNFCCC Secretariat and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) with energy statistics and analysis.
John Ferriter has a BA in Economics from Queens College of the University of New York, an LLB from Fordham University School of Law, and an MPA from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.
