IMCA LUNCHEON
MONDAY, APRIL 11, 2016
Mr. John Ferriter
Former Deputy Executive (Number Two)
International Energy Agency, Paris, France
Topic: "WORLD ENERGY OUTLOOK"
The International Energy Agency (IEA) was launched in 1974 as a counterweight to the Oil Embargo Actions of OPEC. Its main objectives are to secure access to reliable and ample oil supplies and to maintain effective emergency response capabilities. The IEA was formed with 17 original member countries and in the four decades since its founding it has almost doubled its membership, welcoming Estonia as the 29th member State.
Climate change is also a core concern of IEA because 70% of green house emissions derive from energy production or use; hence the IEA works to counter change in many ways. Much has changed in the past 40 years, not least which countries use energy today and how. But the core mission of IEA remains intact, i.e. energy security, though even that very definition has expanded to include a broader range of activities.
Mr. Ferriter has broad global experience, has held several key positions and has lived in many countries in different parts of the World. Prior to his appointment to IEA in 1989, he served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for International Energy Policy, Ambassador to Djibouti in NE Africa on the Gulf of Aden, Diplomatic postings to several African countries and Representative to the OECD.
John Ferriter has a Bachelors Degree in Economics from
NY City University, an LLB from Fordham University and an MPA from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.
