The mission of the Marco Island Historical Museum (Society) is to preserve and to share the history and heritage of Marco Island and the surrounding community.
Often we think of "History" as something that happened a long time ago. True, thousands of years, but some of the most exciting events have occurred in the last 50 or 60 years. History is something that is developing every moment of the day. We will see the Marco Island region historical segments: CALUSA PERIOD, the earliest settlers, PIONEER DAY, 1800's to the 1960's, and MODERN MARCO today.
In 1896, archaeologist, Frank Cushing found on Marco Island, an unknown Native American culture that he named "Key Dwellers." During a Smithsonian expedition, he finds more than 2000 objects, practically the entire inventory of a village from a swamp. Because of the absence of oxygen in the muck, objects of perishable material such as wood and plant fiber have been preserved for the past fifteen hundred years! Among these famous artifacts is the 'Key Marco Cat', a six-inch statuette half human/ half feline.
The museum campus uses unique design, informative displays and an exciting recreated village scene to bring to life the archaeological discoveries, the Calusa Indians, the pioneer days of the white settlement, and Marco today.
