IMCA LUNCHEON AT VINEYARDS C.C.

FEBRUARY 8, 2016

DR. RIYAZ HASSANALI
Dermatologist, Advanced Cosmetic Surgery Center, Buffalo, NY

TOPIC: "TANZANIA AND SUB-SAHARAN EAST AFRICA"

Tanzania is an East African country known for its vast   wilderness areas which include the plains of Serengeti National Park, and Kilimanjaro National Park, home of Africa's highest mountain. Offshore, in the Indian Ocean, are tropical islands known as the Zanzibar Archipelago, a semi-autonomous part of Tanzania since 1963 when the British protectorate ended.

Dr. Riyaz Hassanali, now a Buffalo, NY physician, was born in Zanzibar. His dedication and continuing commitment to Tanzania is seen by his annual returns to do charitable work there in this extreme poverty stricken country.

Tanzania's population is approximately 45 million composed of numerous ethnic, linguistic and religious groups. The official languages are Swahili and English. It is a rural region as only 7 million live in 31 cities and only 7 of these cities have a population over a quarter million. The capital, since 1996, has been Dodoma, located in the interior of the country. Dar Es Salam, the former capital and by the coast, is the country's largest city, principal port and leading commercial center. It still retains most of the Government offices.

In much of the Sub-Saharan Africa region, infection is a huge problem. Per Dr Hassanali " ... you'll find the worst extremes of poverty and illness there. Simple things we take for granted here are missing, like clean water, for example. Eighty percent of Tanzanians don't get clean water. What is the result? Dysentery and diarrhea are a big problem. Infection is a huge problem. Often it's infection compounded by diabetes, which they aren't even aware they have. You may not realize it, but a small infection, when untreated, can grow to be a crippling or even fatal event ... What happens eventually is that by the time they reach a doctor many of these people have to get an amputation". Poor sanitation is the likely source of the contamination.

Today, Tanzania is now on the global energy map because new technologies of energy exploration have allowed geologists to identify large offshore natural gas fields. As global companies set up offices in the country, the workers and their companies will spur the establishment of more modern medical facilities and schools. This offers a hope for the beginning of a new era for the Tanzanian people, especially its children.
