APRIL 13, 2015 LUNCHEON AT VINEYARDS C.C.

MR. BRUCE A. BEARDSLEY

FOREIGN SERVICE OFFICE (retired) WITH THE U. S. STATE DEPARTMENT

"A Modern U.S. State Department Embassy: Tales of its Role, Staffing, Functions in Crisis/Conflict Management"

    Bruce Beardsley

A U.S. embassy today is the nerve center for our country's diplomatic activities within the borders of another nation, serving as the headquarters of the chief of mission (the ambassador), staff, and other agencies. It is usually located in the receiving nation's capital but there may also be consulates located in key regional cities.

Our speaker began his 31-year Foreign Service career with a return to Vietnam as a District Senior Advisor (he served in Vietnam earlier as a soldier).  This was followed by tours in Lebanon, Afghanistan, Denmark, Malaysia, South Korea, Thailand, the Philippines, Mexico and Kosovo. During his career he served in consular, political, political-military, refugee and front office positions. Yet diplomacy was not all glitter: Bruce was under small arms fire in three countries and was also the object of assassination plots in three.

Bruce holds a BA from the University of Nevada at Reno and a MPA from Harvard University. He taught foreign policy at UCLA as Diplomat in Residence, and currently offers short courses on Vietnam and Diplomacy at FGCU's Renaissance Academy

Since retirement, he has undertaken short assignments with the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) in the Balkans, and participated in over 30 training exercises with the U.S. Army in Europe.

Bruce will discuss how our embassies around the world protect and advance national interests abroad, interpret foreign events as they relate to the U.S. (and their effects on others), the protection of American citizens and embassy activities when crises strike.
