 Supporting ELA achievement across the curriculum: A professional development workshop for grades 6-12
The Common Core ELA Standards are designed to support "21st century" instruction--learning that is rigorous, relevant and real-world. But you can't prepare students for the 21st century with 20th century curriculum. Nor can schools truly teach the ELA standards with a "check-list" approach that limits them to language arts courses.
Supporting achievement in this new era requires reframing
curriculum in all disciplines in ways that demand deep analysis, critical thinking and problem-solving. This workshop introduces content and instructional design strategies to meet this challenge.
In this hands-on, practical session, teachers and curriculum specialists will:
- Apply 21st century issues and concepts to their discipline in ways that promote analysis and critical thinking.
- Align outcomes, instruction, assessment and disciplinary "big ideas" to Common Core ELA standards.
- Sequence a unit or course to engage students in real-world problem-solving and walk away with a course or unit "makeover."
- Gain frameworks and resources for meeting ELA standards across the curriculum, with a special emphasis on Informational Texts and Speaking and Listening.
- Receive access to an online library of interdisciplinary curriculum and resources aligned to the specific Common Core standards, which will enable users in any discipline to support ELA achievement.
