Greetings!

One word: Plastics

Plastic is ubiquitous in our lives, and learning more about its production and disposal can help us make more informed choices. We can help! We're pleased to announce two new lessons on plastics this month, adding to our growing portfolio on materials science, chemistry, and design.

We will continue to send out monthly updates for subscribers, and encourage you to contact us with any questions or to offer suggestions.

2 New Lessons: Life Cycle of Two Plastics and Biomagnification and Plastics
The Life Cycle of Two Plastics (grades 6+): Learners investigate the concepts of biodegradation and chemical structures by comparing the life cycle of biotic and abiotic plastics. The lesson includes an experiment, guided reading selections, graphic organizers and formative assessments.

Biomagnifcation and Plastics (grades 9+): A simulation paired with reading selections help learners explore the concept of biomagnifcation with a focus on "body burden" and the chemistry of persistent organic pollutants (POPs). The lesson also examines the international treaty the Stockholm Convention as a response to POPs, and supports learners to write a policy paper on the issues.

To find these lessons, login to the CRC and select the "Build Your Own Curriculum" database tab.  Scroll down to enter the lesson title into the Keyword search box.

CRCHIddenResourceHidden Resource in the CRC:  Marine Debris Concepts in the Classroom
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration released this slideshow presentation for classrooms detailing the issue of marine debris currently affecting the world's oceans and great lakes. A link to their presentation covers the causes, the locations, and impact of debris filling the oceans. It also offers an app for tracking debris and a lesson plan for studying the debris in a year-long activity.

To find this hidden treasure, login to the CRC and select the "Resources" database tab.  Then select "Ecological Footprint Resources" and "Instructional Materials for K-12 Classrooms."
