Curriculum and Resource Center

Greetings!

This month in the CRC, we are featuring new lessons in K12 which support students learning math concepts and skills through a sustainability lens.

We also hope many of you will be joining us this month at the
national conference of the American Association of Colleges of Teacher Education (AACTE), where we will be presenting on sustainability as a new paradigm for teacher preparation.

We will continue to send out monthly updates for subscribers, and encourage you to contact us with any questions or to offer suggestions.
New_LessonNew Lesson: Feeding Yourself for a Year: Geometry Focus for Grades 6+
Students create a model of a fictional farm that includes the different land use types needed to provide all of their food, and absorb the associated wastes, for an entire year. In addition, students use geometric shapes, terms and calculations to create and analyze their models.

The activity is designed to help students understand the role of croplands, forests, waterways, and other land use types in supporting their needs, while also developing geometry skills.

New_ResourceNew Assessment: Expressions and Equations through Rates of Deforestation: Common Core Math Assessment
Common Core: Rate of DeforestationThrough this assessment, students demonstrate knowledge of expressions and equations by examining real world issues about the rate of deforestation.

This resource adds to our growing collection of Common Core math assessments in which students apply ratios and proportional relationships, measurement and data, numbers and operations, and expressions and equations to investigate sustainability topics.  Each assessment includes a detailed answer key with teaching tips, step by step calculations and leveled assessment suggestions for differentiated learning.
