New_LessonNew Lesson: Evaluating Positions on Land Use
Developing policies for sustainable communities requires an understanding of multiple positions on land use.  This new lesson helps learners evaluate and assess diverse positions on land use.  Students evaluate statements from multiple sources and evaluate the positions based on evidence, underlying values, and potential bias.  The lesson is a great way to introduce the potentially politicized nature of land use issues by highlighting the tensions between private property rights and the public good.  Recommended for grades 9 and up.

To find the instructor and learner packet for this lesson, login to the CRC and select the "Build Your Own Curriculum" database tab.  Scroll down to enter the lesson title into the Keyword search box.

Tips & Tricks: Building Critical Thinking Through Online Research

The election may be over, but spirited debate over issues continues--especially online.  As you send your students off into cyberspace for research, how can you help them identify credible sources and potential bias? We recommend the lesson Evaluating the Credibility of Websites. This lesson provides an overview of organization types based on website addresses (e.g., .edu, .org, .com), and what this can indicate about viewpoints, bias, and credibility. The lesson includes research guidelines and critical thinking prompts. Recommended for grades 6 and up.
