Ford's Focus
It's been another snowy week here at Penn State. If Punxsutawney Phil is right, winter is nowhere near over.
I'd like to extend a big thank you to everyone who worked hard to keep Penn State's roads and walkways safe and passable. Your hard work is greatly appreciated. Check out the "Cheers" below, including one from President Barron. In addition, I'd like to recognize members of Bob Mulhollem's team who gave up part of their holiday break to make repairs to the Utility Network. Thank you for your dedication, and congratulations on your Superior Performance Awards.
Best,
Ford

A Presidential Thank You
Penn State's President, Dr. Eric Barron, sent out a thank you for the work performed by the snow crews during last week's snow event. Nearly 9 inches of snow blanketed the University Park campus.
"May I just say that I am incredibly impressed by your crews and what they have accomplished. And even in the midst of all the hard work, your staff got out of the plow and took the time to shovel around a car parked in front of Schreyer House (we had a guest for the weekend). Very thoughtful. Certainly a big job, but matched by a big effort."
Snow Cheers
Mohamed Wahba, a graduate student here at University Park, also wrote in to express his gratitude for this week's snow removal efforts. "I would like you thank your office and the many people who take care of campus during this crazy weather. Your office is quick to act and efficient. You make us want to wish that roads outside of campus are taken care of in the same professional manner."

Each edition we'll have a photograph of an item found in the attic. We hope you'll have fun guessing what it is. We'll include the answer in the next edition. Send your guesses to newsviews@psu.edu.
The item in the Jan. 20 issue of News & Views is a type of wire crimper. Thanks for all your guesses!

When I reach out to individuals who are retiring, I never know much about them ahead of time, but hope in our conversation that something I hadn't expected will pop up. Such was the case with Robert Frank when he stopped by my office earlier this week. After 20 years at Penn State with OPP, Frank is heading to retirement on Feb. 5. During our conversation, Frank, a Refrigeration Technician, kept referring to his "previous life" and I finally asked what he used to do. "I was in the Air Force for 20 years working in civil engineering," he said. My curiosity was piqued! Frank spent much of his 20 years with the Air Force somewhere around the world. He spent time in the Pacific, including Okinawa, Japan, but he says the highlight of his career was spent in Europe. "I was stationed in Berlin," said Frank. "I was there for the unification and got to do both western and eastern Europe. It really was the crowning jewel of my career, a really exciting time." So how did Frank end up here in Central PA? Despite originally being from the area, Frank said he never gave Penn State much thought until he met Bob Harris about 11 years into his military career. From then on, every time he came home he would come and network. "You could say I 'targeted it' for when I left the military," Frank said. When Frank first started at Penn State, he ended up on the weekend crew. "It proved to be a blessing in disguise. We had a great crew at the time. There wasn't anything we couldn't handle between all the trades. We all worked together really well." After seven years, Frank joined the chiller crew and stuck with it. One of his more poignant memories took place on a weekend during a holiday break. "We got a call that there was a water leak coming out the door at the MRI. If you've ever seen Niagara Falls during winter when it's frozen, imagine that. The water leak was frozen down the stairwell and coming out the door with more water flowing. It had clearly been running for awhile. It was definitely one of the most spectacular things I think I saw on the job." Now with just a few days left, Frank is looking forward to his retirement. "I'm excited for more saddle time on the bikes, travel and golf, and not in any particular order." Long-term plans for Frank and his wife include traveling the country with a toy hauler, a camper with a garage for their bikes. "We'll park it, unload them and check out the area. We have friends and family scattered all over the states so we have plenty of places to go." Regardless of where his travels take him, Frank said he'll look back on his Penn State career with fondness. "I've worked with great people," he said. "A lot of the guys have been really super. That's pretty much what you miss whenever you leave some place...it's the people."

During the holiday break, OPP experienced a total loss of the campus Utility Network. Emergency repairs were needed to get the network communicating again. Tom Walker, Gary Persing, Shawn Zimmerman and Larry Murray all gave up a bit of their break to make the repairs. Tom, Gary and Shawn came in on Sunday, Jan. 28 to make the initial repairs. The next day Larry, who drove from his family's home in Philadelphia, joined Tom to perform a more thorough analysis and make permanent corrections to the network.
Bob Mulhollem honored the group with the Office of Physical Plant Superior Performance Awards on Jan. 20.
 | Congratulations and thank you to Tom, Gary, Shawn and Larry! |

One of the suggestions we received in the News & Views reader survey was to add a section for retirement planning tips and information. We have taken that suggestion to heart. In each edition, we'll include information and links to retirement information found both on the web and from Penn State's Office of Human Resources. Remember, regardless of your age it's always important to plan ahead for retirement.
When it comes to considering retirement, the idea can be both exciting and daunting all at once. When it finally comes time to make it official, that shouldn't be too hard.
But how do you initiate the process?
According to the Penn State Office of Human Resources, you should notify your HR representative first, followed by the Employee Benefits office. Discussions regarding retirement should take place about three months prior to when you expect to retire, or at least as soon as you know you plan to retire.
For more answers to retirement questions, visit the Penn State Office of Human Resources Retirement FAQs.
