Ford's Focus
I hope you enjoy the last issue of News & Views before the holiday break. Please be sure to check out the dates and information regarding University closures during the holidays. As a reminder as we approach the holiday break, please remember to shut down computers and other devices and turn off lights to help us reduce our energy use.
Don't forget to take some time to check out the feature "Beards of OPP." I have to say I am quite impressed with the many shapes, sizes and colors represented.
The News & Views survey is still available in case you have not filled it out. As mentioned in the last newsletter, we are looking at updating both the look and the content and would appreciate your feedback. It should only take a few minutes.
I hope you have a safe and enjoyable holiday. We'll see you in the new year.

We Need Your Opinion!
Thank you to all those who have already responded to our brief survey regarding News & Views. We appreciate the feedback. Here's what we've learned so far!
- "Welcomes and Farewells" is the #1 favorite section of News & Views. Per a suggestion, we will look to include photos of all new hires.
- Suggestions for content included a greater focus on all the various units within OPP, announcements for upcoming events and retirement and benefit tips.
- All respondents indicated that their preferred place to read News & Views was on their computer, as opposed to their cell phone or tablet.
- The top responses for how often News & Views should be sent out was biweekly and once per month. We'll be pursuing biweekly publication.
The survey is still available. If you haven't taken it, please take a few minutes to fill it out and help us create a better employee newsletter. We look forward to hearing from you!

The Beards of OPP
We asked and you obliged!
In honor of No-Shave November, we decided to highlight the many shapes, sizes, styles and colors of beards at OPP. Many of you shared your own photo or posed to have your photo taken. Here's a small sampling. Check out the rest on OPP's new Flickr page.
As promised, all photos were cropped and no names are associated with the photos.

Winter Break Closedown
The official holiday break will be from Dec. 24, 2014 through Jan. 1, 2015. University offices and operations will be closed Jan. 2, but it is not a University holiday and employees must account for this time appropriately.
In an effort to reduce energy use over the Holiday Break, temperatures in many University facilities will be reduced to conserve energy, generate savings and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Heat will be reduced Dec. 24, 2014 through Jan. 4, 2015 and return to normal operating temperatures on Jan. 5.

OPP Shovel Brigade Answers the Call for Snow Removal at Beaver Stadium
On Wednesday, Nov. 26, a nor'easter blanketed a large portion of the east coast in snow, ice and rain. With students returning from the holiday break on Friday and a home football game on Saturday, the Office of Physical Plant's snow removal operation faced a busy few days.
OPP crews began work during the
storm, taking care of most University Park's 17,000 parking spaces, 35 miles of paved roads and 60 miles of paved walkways. Snow removal began in the 106,357-seat Beaver Stadium on Friday.
A big THANK YOU goes out to the Essential Snow Team, Landscape, Custodial, the Labor Crew, and the Team 2 Custodial Supervisors for their hard work making campus and Beaver Stadium safe!
There's No Business Like Snow Business
Carol, an employee at the Penn State Hershey Medical Center, and her husband Nev Jackson, Penn State football fans, wrote into OPP to thank the workers who cleaned Beaver Stadium prior to the Michigan State football game. "As a retired PSU employee, current PSHMC employee, and fans, we just wanted to thank everyone for clearing the stadium and making at least that part of the event on Saturday pleasant and safe. What a monumental task. We were snow free and ice free and that was much appreciated."
Cheers to the Shovel Brigade
Melissa Meyer, an Administrative Assistant in the Schreyer Honors College, wrote to OPP to express her gratitude to the many employees who work to clear the snow. "Thank you for writing this story and giving the many people who took time away from their families to take care of the snow removal the recognition that they deserve. It is a huge task that often goes unnoticed and unappreciated."

Toys, Toys, Toys in the Attic
Paul Ruskin, retired Marketing Communications Specialist, recently told us about the OPP Attic. After doing an initial investigation of some of the contents, we decided to add a new feature to News & Views.
Each edition we'll have a photograph of an item in the attic. We hope you'll have fun guessing what it is. We'll include the answer in the next edition. Check out the first item below and send your guesses to newsviews@psu.edu.
Happy Guessing!

A 25-Year Journey
Mo re than 25 years ago, Bing Smith's journey at Penn State was just beginning. In just a few weeks time, his journey at Penn State comes to a close. While many may be jealous of Smith as he heads into retirement, Smith will be the first to respond saying, "Don't wish your life away. Your time will come soon enough."
Smith began working at Penn State in 1989 in a wage/payroll position due to a work stoppage at his previous employer. Less than six months later, Smith was offered what he described as the best Christmas present he had ever received, a full-time position in OPP beginning on Jan. 2, 1990. Smith started out in Custodial Services before moving to Landscaping in 1992. A year later he returned to Custodial Services as a supervisor and has been there ever since.
According to Smith, the job has changed a great deal through the years. "We used to go out and do more hands on stuff and more observing," said Smith. "With new technology, we now spend a lot of our time on the computer."
Even with the changes, the challenges have remained the same. "The biggest challenge was always trying to keep the customers happy," said Smith. "But the other challenge that comes to mind was dealing with snow. There was not only the challenge of getting here as an essential employee, but also making sure no one slips and falls."
One of Smith's most interesting memories on the job involves snow. "It was back in 1993 when we had that big blizzard. We had to shovel the stadium out and it was a 24/7 operation. We even brought in men from SCI Rockview to help. There were also so many unpaid volunteers, including fathers and sons who just came out to help."
N ow, with just a few weeks remaining Smith is looking forward to what the future holds. Once his wife retires, the pair plans to travel. "We want to travel Route 66. That's going to be one of the first things we do. We also want to head back to Ft. Lauderdale to sit on the wave wall. We loved it down there when we visited." Other than that, Smith is looking forward to hunting, fishing, completing projects around the house and keeping active.
Smith is also looking forward to receiving his 25-year rocking chair. "When I started here I didn't know about the rocking chair," said Smith. "Once I saw one and saw how well built they are, I knew I wanted one."
However, Smith almost missed out on his rocking chair. Once he submitted his intent to retire effective Jan. 1, 2015, he received a call from Susan Rutan, Human Resources Manager, telling him he couldn't retire on Jan. 1. He asked why and learned his 25th year would not be in place until Jan. 2. "It was so nice of her to call me and tell me that. I'm going to remember that for a long time."
While Smith is looking forward to retirement, he acknowledged how thankful he is for his time at Penn State. "It's been a great place to work," said Smith. "There's been ups and downs, but you just go with the flow and make the best of everything."

OPP in Penn State Today
ICYMI (In case you missed it), OPP has been featured prominently in Penn State Today. We hope you'll take a few minutes to check out the most recent story, as well as recognize the many individuals involved in making the project successful.
Hydroelectric Facility Provides Sustainable Energy, Educational Opportunities A partnership in support of the creation of a hydroelectric facility has provided Penn State with both sustainable energy and educational opportunities for students. The Mahoning Creek Hydroelectric Facility -- a certified low-impact plant, built using existing infrastructure -- now supplies Penn State with eight percent of its energy.

We Are!
Penn State Today recently announced a new weekly feature called "We Are!" designed to honor Penn Staters for going the extra mile in the work they do for the University.
We would like to follow suit to better showcase not only the people of OPP, but also the varied work performed by each department. Periodically we will recognize outstanding contributors in News & Views. We encourage everyone to submit nominations. Occasionally we maybe submit a nomination to Penn State Today for consideration in their weekly feature.
Nominations should be no more than 1-2 paragraphs that speak to how your colleague goes above and beyond their job duties. Please send nominations at any time to newsviews@psu.edu.
