Ford's Focus
Next week you will see a "Penn State Values & Culture Survey" appear in your email inbox. President Erickson is asking all faculty, staff, tech service employees, administrators, and students to share their views about the culture of the University and the values we share as a community. A full list of FAQs about the survey can be found here.
I want to strongly encourage all of you to participate and provide feedback to help build a better, more responsive and accountable Penn State. Special provisions are being made for tech service employees to complete the survey at designated computer stations and while on the clock. The survey will take approximately 20 minutes to complete.
I want to assure you that your feedback is confidential information will only be provided to Penn State in summary form so no individual can be identified. This is essential, because the utility of this survey is in open answers from everyone.
Penn State, and OPP in particular, strives to meet the highest ethical standards in every way, and we need you to help us to identify areas of strength and areas for improvement.
Thank you, in advance, for your participation.

Wounded Warrior Project
Several OPP team members are participating in the First Happy Valley Warrior Benefit Challenge this Saturday, Oct. 26. This event is a test of physical fitness and mental toughness. It consists of twelve, cross-fit challenge stations followed by a four mile run.
Chris Musser (Design Services) and Derek Leonard (Design and Construction) founded the Happy Valley Warrior Benefit Challenge to raise funds for the Wounded Warrior Project (WWP). They provide unique, direct programs and services to meet the needs of injured service members.
Along with Chris and Derek, Larry Fennessey (Engineering Services), Matt Jones (Design Services), and Ed Gannon make up OPP's entries in the event. Donations to the cause are appreciated, and checks (made out to Wounded Warrior Project) can be dropped off at Ed Gannon's office. Our heroes need our help!
Bicycle Repair Stations Keep 'em Rolling
OPP and Penn State Transportation Services have just installed four bicycle repair stations on campus. Tom Flynn, OPP Landscape Architect in charge of the project, said the units are part of the ongoing plan to make the campus bicycle friendly.
"We expect the campus bicycling community to be delighted with the repair stations. Students, faculty, staff, or just anyone with a bike in need of repair is welcome to use them."
Tom said the stations were located at key bicycle user areas, including the Stadium West bike shelter, Thomas Building bike parking court, Willard Building, and the Stuckemann Family Building. "Many students and faculty who live in outlying areas drive into campus by car and switch to bicycle when they reach campus...now any repair problems can be solved on the spot!"
The units contain tools to perform basic repairs, including Phillips and flat head screwdrivers, a complete set of allen wrenches, headset wrench, pedal wrench, box wrenches, tire levers, and a tire pump. All the tools are connected by stainless steel cables and tamper proof fasteners to a central post. The stations are built to last and designed to survive outdoors in all kinds of weather.

Chivalry Is Not Dead
Lisa Cryster from Plant Science wrote to congratulate OPP.
" During the lunch hour I was setting outside the front doors of Tyson Building on the benches. A truck pulled up and two guys got out to clean up a pile of leaves."
"One of the guys walked over to
us and said 'excuse me, but there is going to be some dust here for about 2 minutes while we clean up these leaves, we have to get them cleaned up.'"
"I just wanted to let you know how considerate I thought that was and this was very nice to see today."

A Day in the Life of an Environmental Technician...
When Tom Kline includes his early wage payroll days, he accumulated over 42 years at OPP! Tom described his workday before he retired.
"I'm one of those nuts who got here early. I was only coming in from Lemont, but I really hated heavy traffic and did my best to avoid it. I was usually here about 6 a.m. and started work at 7 a.m. Between 6 and 7, I had some coffee and talked to people to warm up for the day."
Tom did Continuous Commissioning, and one of his last projects was the Chandlee Building. It was considered one of the worst buildings on campus because so many systems were patched into it, and one system would be fighting another. "We used to have horrible smells up in the mechanical rooms...we called it the love canal building!" Tom said that when OPP finished with the building, the horrible smells vanished.
Every day Tom's job was to make campus buildings energy efficient and provide comfort to building occupants by supplying clean air flow. His most recent projects, prior to Chandlee were Borland, and the Life Science building where he spent two years fixing building systems. A variety of contractors were called in to make changes based on Tom's work.
"I really like working on controls and renovations; when I started it was so primitive. The technology is so advanced now, I can be in one building while scanning another. We can see the whole building temperatures, the air handlers. To me, it's amazing after having lived through the old system when I used to run through every room in the building, stand there, and check the temperatures. Everything was inaccurate and hard to keep calibrated. We had a lot of customer complaints! Now we can maintain high quality by just watching the data on screen and e-mailing reports!"
Once Al Rossman retired, Tom had the most seniority of any technician at OPP. Tom has seen all the students change from using walkmans to cell phones and now texting all the time. "Every generation is a little different. Students are still students, and I think the current group is the best behaved I've seen in years. Years ago there was more student friction. I feel more comfortable around them now."
Tom has seen a lot of changes at OPP. "Years ago we were given pagers that would beep and you had to call in. Then we got pagers that would even give you a message. Now we have cell phones, email, and computers. I live with my computer, a lot like a doctor and his stethoscope."
When Tom began work at OPP, Erik Walker was the Penn State President. "He didn't believe in air conditioning except for animal labs. At one point they told us there would be no new buildings on campus because we didn't have enough steam to heat them. Looks like we have plenty of steam now!"
Tom Kline always enjoyed his work at OPP and recently retired so that his could provide full time support for his ailing wife.
*Postscript
It is with great sorrow that we report the passing of Tom's wife Rita M. Kline on Oct. 15, 2013. Rita was always an avid animal enthusiast, and friends of Rita are asked to make a donation to the animal shelter of their choice in her memory. Our heartfelt condolences go out to Tom and his family.
