Ford's Focus
We've started a new section of News & Views called "A Day in the Life" where we'll highlight a different position every week. The idea is to give everyone a better idea of the range of work we do here in OPP.
I know people will soon be heading off for vacations, so I want to take this opportunity to wish all of you a Happy Thanksgiving and to remind everyone to stay safe next week at the start of Deer Season.
Enjoy the holiday,
Ford

Safety Record
The Sound of One Hand Clapping
Well, it was a rough week for OPP hands.
One worker crushed their hand against a wall trying to close a set of double doors.
Another worker smashed their hand between a trash cart they were pulling and a wooden box left in a hallway.
Finally, a worker fractured their hand reaching through a closing door to try to shut off a light.
All of these injuries were painful and avoidable. Please remember to take a look around for all hazards in the course of your work.
As always, please report all safety hazards, near miss incidents and safety success stories.
Call us at 863-2340.
Visit us, or even drop a note outside our office in 103 Physical Plant.
Let's have a safety record to crow about.

Veteran's Day Celebration Photos
The F&B Veteran's Day event honored OPP Armed Forces veteran's last week. This special event featured the opportunity to learn fly fishing through "Project Healing Waters" a Federal program dedicated to the rehabilitation of disabled military personnel. Visit our Flickr page to see your co-workers practicing indoor fly fishing at the HUB.
Hungry OPP employees learned how to be hearty, healthy, and happy at last week's workshop taught by Jody Whipple, Penn State's slim & trim dietician. Employees had a great lunch and learned how to spot a whole grained fig newton at 50 yards. The next healthy lunch workshop is scheduled for December 3. For information contact Melissa Walker.
Faculty Staff Achievement Awards
Charity Stripe Challenge
This year's Challenge features three-person teams, comprised of faculty, staff, or technical service employees that shoot 75 free throws apiece. Two teams win-the one that makes the most shots and the one that raises the most money.
The six-year-old effort benefits the United Way because shooters may obtain sponsors to support them on a per-shot-made or pledge basis. Money raised counts toward each team's individual unit total in the overall Penn Sate effort.
The event will take place on November 29 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and the deadline for registration is Friday, November 23. More information is here and pledge sheets are here, or you can contact Steve Sampsell.

Beaver Stadium Goes Wireless
Football fans in Beaver Stadium can now watch the game on their smart phones. Michael Branch, Sr. Construction Manager for AT&T wrote to commend OPP, "PSU stepped up to the plate and hit a home run this weekend. I asked for what seemed impossible to do in a week and your electricians got it nearly completed in one weekend. I'm sure that you are proud of the electricians that work at PSU." OPP electricians ran thousands of feet of conduit and electrical circuits to connect communications closets to the Stadium antennas. This weekend project to set up the Stadium DAS (Distributed Antenna System) of 250 antennas was completed by 14 electricians from Central, Area, and Reno. Jerry Fulare commended the crew and said, "ESPN, ABC, and the Big 10 Network are always impressed with our stadium team." Congratulations to the electricians who made the Stadium wireless: Bob Bair Steve Harter Tom Samuels Steve Lucas Dave Stanley John Horgas Larry Gmerek Doug Keith Darrel Mills Dick Fellows Mike Long Milford Woods Glenn Walstrom Jason Supenia Focus on Appearance Award The Design and Review Board of State College Borough has selected the Nittany Lion Inn for its Focus on Appearance Award to be awarded tonight at the Borough Council Meeting.

A Day in the Life
What is it like to be...an OPP Electrician?
Steve Harter, OPP electrician explained it this way:
"Our work has many challenges. We often have to stop drilling for classes, or delay power shutdowns for hours, days, or weeks due to semester schedule. Students are number one and we try to never interfere with their needs.
OPP electricians need special skills. University systems are very complicated, and we handle everything from 24 to 13,000 volts.
We deal with a lot of things other electricians never see.
Between Central, Area, PM, Reno, Utilities Electricians, and Electrical Integrity there are 56 electricians.
We like the challenges. It never gets boring. Our guys run into a problem and we sit down with Jerry (Fulare), figure out what we need, we work it out, get it done, and meet the window.
Stadium work is a special category. Up at the Stadium we always have a game plan, but new things pop up by the hour and must be done by Friday for the Saturday game.
Safety is definitely a priority. We have shutdown policies, lock down and tag out procedures. Our goal is that we get the job done and go home safely at the end of the day."
