Ford's Focus

The big focus this weekend and into next week is the severe weather that is supposed to pass through the area. Please keep yourself aware in what may end up being a hazardous environment.

Again, signing up for the PSUTXT service is the best way to be notified of campus-wide alerts.

Stay safe. Stay dry.

Safety Record

Four words no one wants to hear are PUNCTURE, LACERATION, STRAIN, and CONTUSION. Unfortunately, we heard (and felt) all of them this week.

Even one injury a week is too many. As we get busier and busier leading up to the holidays, please be more and more vigilant, paying attention to safety.

One worker punctured their leg with broken laboratory glass that was improperly placed in a regular trash bag. Their supervisor immediately contacted EHS to remind the occupants to follow proper glass disposal procedures.

Another worker was injured when a window blind cover fell, striking their hardhat and lacerating their ear.

A third worker strained his abs lifting 80 lbs. of pipe from the floor to above his head.

Finally, a worker caught their hand between a cart and the wall of an elevator while moving trash.

As always, please report all safety hazards, near miss incidents, and safety success stories.

Change Is Never Easy

Corey Lucas was appointed as the new District 41, Custodial Supervisor on Monday, October 15. Corey has acted as the District 43, Custodial Supervisor and also the Floor Care Supervisor, thus bringing with him a number of years of custodial experience.  Connie Brumgard congratulated everyone who helped in the transition.

"I want to thank Kelly Clemons for all her hard work and devotion to District 41 over the last years and congratulate her on her new appointment to Custodial Supervisor of District 11. I also want to thank Kelly along with Bing Smith, Rick Dills, and Patsy Del Baggio for their continuous service/coverage of District 41 during the absence and the process of filling the District 41 Custodial Supervisor's position. All of these individuals stepped up above and beyond their responsibilities, and I am extremely appreciative to all of them."

Shutdown for Life

John Wisehaupt, Facilities Coordinator for Life Sciences, wrote to thank OPP for the well planned, trouble free, upfront work that went into the HVAC shutdown in the Life Sciences Building.

"Thanks to everyone involved, including Steve Oskin who provided engineering support, technicians Tom Kline and Jared Bayer, as well as Bob Krasinski and Ed Drapcho who developed and distributed room temperature reports every two hours during the shutdown. Katie Rountree and Bruce Smith served as project leaders and they all depended on 2nd shift Heat & Vent technicians and Area Service employees for invaluable support."

OPP Trivia

Given the nasty weather we can expect here next week, we're throwing out some weather-related trivia this week. Send your answers to Alex Novak. The first person to answer all three questions correctly will receive a prize to keep them warm and possibly dry.

1. On a cold day, how many truck loads of coal are delivered to the West Campus Steam Plant?

2. How much does it cost to close the University Park campus for a snow day?

3. Who are the two OPP employees who have survived more than 40 winters at Penn State?
