Ford's Focus
We have a lot to cheer about this week. We've seen employees looking out for each other, and we've received thanks for our good work. Please check out our "Safety Record" and "Cheers" sections for some heartening news.
Also, a few of you have mentioned that you are either not receiving News & Views or that it is routing to your spam folder. Please e-mail Alex Novak or Paul Ruskin so they can make sure you hear from us each week.
Have a great week,
Ford

Safety Record
We had only one injury since last issue. An employee continuously reaching overhead to feed sewer relining material into the relining machine had a strained shoulder.
Safety in Numbers
The big success story of the week is about an accident that didn't happen. An employee who wasn't feeling well thought he might go to a quiet storage area so that he could sit and rest in private. A co-worker noticed he didn't look well and approached him to see if everything was OK. The employee was having a heart attack. The co-worker loaded him up and transported him to the emergency room. The employee is now recovering. Sometimes we want to be alone when we're not well. In this case, the result could have been tragic. Be aware of your health, and listen when your body warns you. Keep an eye out for your co-workers. Their health might be in your hands.
As always, please report all safety hazards, near miss incidents and safety success stories.
Call us at 863-2340.
Visit us, or even drop a note outside our office in 103 Physical Plant.
Let's have a safety record to crow about.

Announcements & Reminders
OPP Food Drive Helps the Needy
The annual Food Drive is next week (Oct. 22-26). Please consider donating canned and boxed food items to help your neighbors. Donations should be placed in the front lobby of the Physical Plant Building and at donation tables throughout the building. See Terry Mahon for details.
F&B Veterans Celebration Announced
All military veterans at OPP are invited to attend the
annual Veterans Celebration Event on Nov. 9. It will be held at the HUB Heritage Hall from 9-11 a.m.
This year, we are pleased to announce the formation of a chapter for F&B veterans in the Project Healing Waters program. Although normally reserved for disabled veterans, this chapter will be open to any F&B employee who has served in any branch of the armed forces in their lifetime, regardless of disability status.

Cheers
Chemistry Comes Clean
Larry Johns from the Eberly College of Science wrote to thank the entire custodial staff for a job well done in the Chemistry Building and throughout the Chemistry Department.
"Our buildings are not easy to clean as they each present different challenges. We appreciate all you do for us. THANK YOU AGAIN!"
Biff Myers is the Custodial Supervisor in Chemistry and she went even further. " Right now I am two people short, and most nights they are left to handle the cleaning schedule without extra help. They work in a 'Team Cleaned Building' and they work as a team to divide and conquer this huge area. They are Penn State Proud, and I am glad they work in D42."
Grateful Grads
Kinesiology Professor David Conroy wrote to thank Kate Lumley-Sapanski for helping his students understand PSU safety policies and procedures as they transition into grad school.
Men of Metal
The OPP Welding Shop does everything from sealing old bomb shelters to fixing flag poles. The critical work of welders Tom Worrick (right), Roy Butler and Bill Rider is featured in this edition of the F&B Newsletter.
Supervisor John Lyons is quick to highlight the expertise of his crew.
"It's an interesting skill set to have, because people use our work every day, and they may not realize the work that goes into it."
