Now Is the Time to Ask Governor Scott to Veto SB 850

Governor Scott has yet to sign the controversial Voucher Expansion Bill, SB 850, into law and Florida PTA, along with the Florida Conference of NAACP, League of United Latin American Citizens, Florida School Boards Association, Florida Education Association, Fund Education Now, Parents Across America Florida, Spanish American League Against Discrimination, Sant Le Haitian Neighborhood Service Center and the League of Women Voters, to date, are seeking the Governor's Veto on the bill.

Now is the time to contact Governor Scott asking him to veto SB 850 before he signs the bill into law.

Contact Information:

Governor Rick Scott
e-mail:
flgov.com
phone:  (850) 488-4441

Sample wording:

Dear Governor Scott,

As a taxpayer, I urge you to veto Senate Bill 850.  SB 850 will divert public money from public schools for private and religious schools without holding them to the same accountability and standards that our public schools are held to.

Florida's voters overwhelmingly rejected the 2012 constitutional amendment regarding the separation of church and state and have "chosen" to support our public schools.  I stand by our state's constitution.

I am counting on you to do the right thing for public education and veto SB 850.

Take Action Now!
Please contact Governor Scott and ask him to VETO SB 850!

President's Message

Summer is here, the children are having fun, we have no routines, and it's great! However for PTA leaders its still work as usual ...it's now time to be meeting with your new board, forming your budget committee, meeting with your principal and getting your calendar ready for the new school year! Here is where Florida PTA can serve you, for a one stop shop, attend our Annual Florida PTA Leadership/ Convention in July.

This year our VP for Leadership, Cindy Gerhardt and Event Chair, Karen Gardner have worked hard to cover everything you will need to know to be a dynamic leader. Whether you are a First Timer or a Seasoned PTA Leader, there is something for all. For a list of workshops go on to our website and see!  Attend the President's workshops or Treasurer's workshop, learn how to Advocate, learn about Common Core!  Want to know how to speak in front of group we have that too!

Check out our Health & Wellness and Exhibitors Fair.  If you "got talent", come to our PTA's got Talent event!!! Oh, and don't forget one of my favorites attend your County Council Social!  If you don't have a County Council we will find one you can adopt!

Is shopping your thing?  Stop in our bookstore and purchase PTA items.  Guest speakers we have them too! Dr. John Gates, Florida's Commissioner of Education, Pam Stewart and maybe a few surprises! You have to attend to see.

Ever since I was a Local Unit President at Highland Oaks Elementary School, in Miami -Dade, I have always attended Florida PTA's Leadership/Convention, it is here where I  met PTA leaders from all over the state that have remained my friends to this day.  At the Leadership/ Convention I could ask questions and get answers that I needed to know, one on one!  This event is empowering, inspiring and a wealth of knowledge.  Did you know that this event is a legitimate line item in your budget well it is!

I look forward to meeting you all there, with your families (there is so much to do at the resort for the kids and significant other), don't forget to bring your membership form and ask me to join your PTA!  I just might do it!  I promise you will leave the event inspire and empowered and certainly ready to lead your PTA!

See you July 11th!

Eileen Segal, President

Why PTA! Because our children matter!!

The Florida PTA Leadership Convention will be three days of action packed business, learning and FUN!  Discover how to get the most out of your weekend, by attending Ready, Set, Go!

This workshop was designed with newcomers in mind, but all delegates will benefit by attending.  Offered first thing on Friday and then repeated Saturday morning for later arrivals, this class will help you map out what classes and events to attend. You'll also learn how to navigate the General Meeting Sessions and how you can participate in conducting the business of the Association.  We'll also discuss the process used to debate platform items and find out why that guy called "Bob" always comes along for the ride! Please, join us!

Do you or your group have a special talent?

Saturday, July 12, 2014 - 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm.

Edinburgh Hall

PTA talent must pre-register their act(s) at the PTA's Got Talent registration desk at the event and look to the bulletin boards for more information.  Donations will be accepted to preform or kick "talent" off stage. Funds raised will benefit the Florida PTA Scholarship Fund. County Councils are requested to hold their County Meet and Greets on Friday, July 11, 2014.

Silent Auction Baskets!!!

Are you creative and do you enjoy putting together theme baskets? If so, we have the perfect opportunity for you to put your creativity to work. Florida PTA's Scholarship Committee hosts a theme basket auction at our annual convention. PTA's from across the state donate baskets that vary in value from $15 to over $100. The baskets are auctioned off in a basket auction in the exhibit hall at leadership/convention. Some examples of baskets that have been donated by local units in the past include:    Game Night - Spa Day - How does your garden grow? - Movie Night - Wedding Dreams - Spaghetti Dinner - Beach Fun - and many, many more.

Also, you can donate a nice item such as a gift card, artwork, etc. and we can auction it as an individual item. The money raised from these baskets helps to fund scholarships for seniors in Florida PTA schools.

For questions, please contact: Tammy Weaver, Scholarship Chair, scholarship@floridapta.org

NATIONAL PTA BACK TO
SCHOOL KIT

This year's theme is Every Child in Focus in honor of PTA's ongoing campaign to better understand the needs of every child and celebrate cultural achievements. Similar to last year, this year's kit is a combination of digital and online resources and contains seven reference guides on PTA finance, membership, programs, fundraising, advocacy, communications and the PTA presidency. As a bonus, each of the quick reference guides is available in PDF format to allow leaders to print and distribute materials as needed.
