Men: A Call To Action!!!

By: Charles Derexson

Immediate Past President

Florida PTA

Family is the fundamental building block of society.  If America does not have strong families and values we are not going to have a strong society.  Unfortunately, the state of the family in America continues to deteriorate.  The marriage rate has fallen to an all-time low, we lead the world in divorce, and about a third of all children live in a home without a father.  Our young people have been taught that getting married and having a family is not a priority, and many of those that would like to get married and have children are not able to get the kinds of jobs that they need to support a family. American families have never been this weak, and this is an incredibly troubling sign for the future of our nation.

Today, more than a million public school students in the United States are homeless.  Instead of being raised by parents, an increasing number of children in America are being raised by movies, television and video games.  For example, the average young American will spend 10,000 hours playing video games before the age of 21.

10 Ways to Get Men More Involved in PTAs

Reprinted from National PTA (www.PTA.org)

How can we get more men involved? National PTA surveyed nearly 2,700 men to find out. The findings from that survey have been distilled to 10 ways a local PTA can break down barriers to male involvement and increase male PTA membership.

1. Make the membership pitch relevant to males.

The number one reason why survey respondents joined PTA was "to work to improve the school for the benefit of my child/children." Therefore, your recruitment materials and your membership pitch should explain how men's involvement in PTA would benefit their children and their children's schools. A dad's involvement in PTA:

  • Shows added interest in his child's education and school activities;
  • Shows greater support for his child's teachers and school; and
  • Improves relationships between parents and school personnel.
10 Ways Continued...
Men: Parental Involvement!

The most impact for achievement in the life of  a child is when there is parent involvement. The chance for a child succeeding in life is cut in half parents are not involved.  So men in PTA is critical not only as a role model but as engaged partner in the development of the child to become an adult and good citizen.

An anecdote, "when I was in Boy Scout Camp with my child, some other adults were teasing me and my son as "Daddy's boy". We were in a lunch line and a young child turned around and said "I wish my father was here".

Another story my daughter in middle school, asked me not to be as involved in her Middle School PTSA as I was in Elementary, but I did get involved but kept my distance. Later on when she was in High School she asked me "why were you not as involved in Middle School?" my answer was I was but you did not see me.

A Message From Your President

Dear PTA Leaders,

There are a few weeks remaining in the Legislative Session.  Please contact your legislators and let them know you support Public Education for all children.

The Leadership/Convention Committee has been busy planning another wonderful event.  We hope you can join us, July 11 - 13, 2014.   This year we have some new workshops that will be offered, and three resolutions, as well as the election of your Florida PTA Officers for 2014-2016.

Thank you for all you do for Florida's children.

Eileen L. Segal,
President Florida PTA

GREAT NEWS!!!
Solicitation of Contributions Registration Requirement

During the Florida PTA Legislation Education Conference, your Florida PTA Treasurer and Executive Director met with several staff members in Commissioner Adam Putnam's office, Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.

The outcome of that meeting is that our local PTA units ARE NOT required to file the Solicitation of Contributions Registration with the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.  Florida State PTA and our County Council PTAs are required to register.

Thank you to all who previously completed the registration requirement.  If you receive a renewal notice, please contact info@Floridapta.org for the information on how to proceed.

M.E.N.
(Mentoring Engaging Now)

The Florida PTA MEN's committee has been working to increase male involvement in the local PTA units in our state. I have heard from many local units about how to increase male involvement and the number 1 thing is to...ASK THEM!  Men are here to help their student not just to build things. Remember to ask not only dads but uncles, brothers, cousins, teachers, custodians etc.

This year we will be having classes at convention for Men and how to not only increase male involvement but what programs are out there for men.  We will be having a welcome class for new male members at Leadership/Convention. We are looking to support our new members as well as welcome our member who have been there prior.  Also we want our own bathroom at convention because there are so many men!

It has been my pleasure being the MEN's Chair for the past two years and I am excited to see what PTA's are doing and will be doing in the near future. As always any local unit or county council can contact the committee with any questions!

Self-Awareness: Why Outreach is Not Enough

Adapted from article by Heather Berthoud and Robert D. Greene

"With greater awareness volunteers are better prepared to interact with each other more effectively and to join together to further their work in the community."

As you may recall, the Diversity Diamond Model looks at a multifaceted, simultaneous approach with external relations, organizational culture, interaction, self-awareness, and continuous learning. As Berthoud and Greene note "no one wants to believe that they have biases but even people who are well-intentioned and support diversity in principle have them." Sometimes the lack of progress in diversity in our association comes from leaders and their limiting perceptions. Self-awareness as the facet of the Diversity Diamond Model "refers to increasing understanding and acknowledgment of one's own personal beliefs, attitudes, assumptions and behaviors. Everyone is part of the diversity picture, and through self-reflection, the individual learns to see that diversity is about 'me' as much as it is about 'them'."

After assessing the association and prior to creating a plan of action, leaders will help propel the association further by initiating some form of awareness-building activity that includes reflection as to their own perceptions and interactions with other groups that are different from them. Interactions tend to be the easiest way to become aware of your biases against a certain group. Incorrect assumptions about another's preferences and values are often the basis for many biases. Remember, the focus is not to blame current leaders for the lack of diversity in the association. However, personal consideration is needed to see how unintentional biases affect collaboration and progression in the association.

Awareness can be challenging. Most individuals aren't comfortable addressing some of the less appealing traits of their personalities. Nonetheless, as leaders, it ultimately helps our mission to stay committed to a more diverse association. Why? Because All children matter!

Important Information

From Florida Department of Children and Families

Health officials at the Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County are advising parents, schools and daycare centers to take precautionary action to prevent the spread of Shigellosis. Since January 1, 2014, the Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County has investigated over 100 confirmed cases of shigellosis surpassing the last three year average of 100 cases. The majority of the reported cases are in children aged 1 through 9. Even though this concentration has been found in South Florida, all Florida child care providers are encouraged to use preventive measures to reduce the spread of disease.

Shigellosis is very contagious and can be spread from person to person. It is an infectious disease caused by a group of bacteria called Shigella. Shigellosis symptoms may develop within 1 to 3 days after having been infected with the Shigella bacteria, and include diarrhea that is watery and sometimes bloody. Other symptoms include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and fever. Symptoms usually resolve within 5 to 7 days. Shigellosis has a cyclic pattern with large community outbreaks, frequently associated with child care settings. In the last decade, Miami-Dade County has experienced increased activity in 2003 and 2005. We are now approaching another period of increased activity in Miami-Dade County.

The Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County recommends the following preventive measures to reduce the likelihood of contracting and spreading Shigellosis:

  • Proper hand washing is the most effective way to prevent shigellosis and many other diseases
    • Wash hands after:
      • bathroom visits
      • diaper changes
      • play time
      • handling of pets or soil
      • before and after food preparation and eating
    • Hand washing among children should be frequent and supervised by an adult, especially in child care centers and homes with children who have not been fully toilet-trained.
    • Everyone who changes a child's diaper should immediately wash the hands of both the changer and the child carefully with soap and warm water
    • Proper hand washing consists of lathering hands with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds. Be sure to rinse the palms, backs of hands, between fingers, under fingernails, and around wrists.
    • Go to www.cdc.gov/handwashing to learn more about hand hygiene
  • Clean and disinfect bathrooms, diaper changing areas, and soiled toys on a routine basis
  • People who have diarrhea should not prepare food or drinks for others
    • People with diarrhea should stay home from daycare, school or work until one full calendar day after symptoms stop

Parents of children, or anyone with symptoms of Shigellosis should contact their healthcare provider for diagnosis and treatment.
