Once the committee is elected, the Chair Pro Tem (appointed by president) calls the first meeting and instructs the members regarding their task. The committee elects its own chair.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
This month National PTA and PTA members around the Nation celebrate Founder's Day, February 17. This is the day we celebrate our legacy and work of our founders, three dedicated women - Alice McLellan Birney, Phoebe Apperson Hearst and Selena Sloan Butler. These advocates dedicated their lives to making sure every child receives a quality equal public education; that every child has quality health care and that safety remains paramount in their everyday lives.
February 17, is a special day that all members reflect and take pride in all achievements of PTA whether you are at the National, State, County or Local level. Any commitment you made to remain a powerful voice for all children deserves to be applauded. As your state President, I want to thank you for your dedication and suggest that you let your efforts be heard and tell those that are not PTA members your accomplishments.
Like our founders, we continue their vision, imagination and courage to stand up and let our voices be heard! Please join me and other members around the state as we attend the Florida PTA Legislation Education Conference March 16-18 in Tallahassee! Registration is now open.
Please join me as we walk the halls of our Capital and do what PTA does best - - - ADVOCATING! PTA has been advocating for all children since 1897!
Happy Birthday PTA!!!
Why? Because our children matter!

New Florida K-12 Standards
for
English Language Arts
and Mathematics
By: Danielle Thomas
Education/Learning
Transitions Chair
After input from parents, educators, and concerned community members, Education Commissioner Pam Stewart presented the proposed changes to the Florida K-12 Standards for English Language Arts and Mathematics to the State Board of Education in January.
The Florida Department of Education has created two charts to make the proposed changes easier to understand. Each of the charts are color coded - white shows public comments, yellow shows the current standard, green shows the proposed standard, and blue represents a new proposed standard.
The chart for the proposed English Language Arts Standards can be found at http://www.fldoe.org/pdf/pcelas.pdf
The chart for the proposed Mathematics Standards can be found at http://www.fldoe.org/pdf/pcmaths.pdf
Within the proposed changes to the English Language Arts Standards, handwriting, including the highly noted cursive writing, is included in the new standards. Mathematics saw more changes with new standards being created as well as standards being moved to more appropriate grade levels, after much public outcry on the level of difficulty of some of the standards.
The proposed changes to the Florida Standards will be voted on by the State Board of Education at their next meeting on Tuesday, February 18.
