Celebrate Founders Day
February 17th

By: Jean Hovey

The Founders Day celebration began in 1910 to commemorate the first convention of the National Congress of Mothers.  It was created by Mrs. David O. Mears, a charter member of the National Congress of Mothers.  The National PTA was the dream of Alice McLellan Birney.  In 1897, Mrs. Birney met Phoebe Apperson Hearst, who helped her transform her dream into reality. The two planned the first "convention", that was held on February 17, 1897, in Washington D.C.  They had hoped that 200 mothers would attend to discuss issues affecting children - - over 2,000 showed up! And it wasn't just mothers, but fathers, doctors, lawyers and legislators who came to express their concerns for children.  Remember in 1897, there were no planes, cell phones and women couldn't vote!  One of the first resolutions passed at the convention called for kindergarten in all public schools.

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Welcome to 2014!!

I hope you and your families had a wonderful and relaxing holiday.  Now that the New Year has begun, it is time to get back to advocating for all of Florida's children.

As the Legislative Session will soon be upon us, please join us in advocating for our children by contacting your Senators and Representatives at their local offices, prior to the Regular Session, and let your voices be heard.  If you haven't signed up this year for Florida PTA's Take Action Network, please do so immediately on our Florida PTA website.   Join our Facebook page for up-to-the-minute information on Bills that will be addressed during Session.  Our children deserve a quality public education and it the legislature's paramount duty to properly fund public education.

Florida PTA is proud to have some wonderful events planned in the next few months, so mark your calendars.

March 16-18, 2014 - Legislation Education Conference in Tallahassee, Florida.  Registration is now open.  Check our website for information and links to register or call the State office.

July 11-13, 2014 - Leadership/Convention will be here before you know it.  Our Leadership team will be meeting shortly with the staff at the Innisbrook Golf Resort in Palm Harbor, Florida to make sure the property and convention area will meet all your needs.  We read all your evaluations and we are listening.

Membership Matters Year Round!  Please keep it coming and stay tuned for another "PTA Connect Day" in Florida.  Remember dues are to be sent to the State Office monthly.  If you haven't joined a local unit, do so today!!!  No reason that Florida PTA should not have the largest PTA in the Nation!  Have you seen our incentives?  Check out our website and see what we are offering the local unit and County Council for an increase in membership.  Did you know that Florida PTA has its own local unit?  We do!  It is called the Sunshine PTA and you can join for just $10.00.  Go on our web site and fill out a membership application today!

As a local unit leader, you should be reading your bylaws to see when you should be holding your next general meeting.  It is also probably time to look into electing a Nominating Committee.  Follow your bylaws to see who is eligible to serve on this committee.

I am also looking to visit your school and attend a PTA meeting.  If you are interested in having me, please contact me at President@floridapta.org and I will try to schedule a meeting with your PTA...that goes for County Councils, too.

Remember, Florida PTA is here to serve you, so please do not hesitate to contact the state office at 407.855.7601 or 1.800.373.5782 or by email, info@floridapta.org.

Why?  Because our children matter!

Regions and Councils Commission

Melissa Kicklighter

Vice President Regions and Councils

regionscouncils@floridapta.org

The Regions and Councils Commission is the direct line of support to the local unit PTAs across the State of Florida. There are currently seven (7) regions within Florida PTA and within each region there are multiple counties.  Over the past year, Florida PTA has been working to review and improve upon the structure and function of the geographic regions and the role of the region representative. Some of the regions contain counties that also have County Councils that are able to locally support the efforts of the PTAs. For the regions and counties without a County Council, the Vice President for Regions and Councils and the Florida PTA office staff have worked together to directly communicate with and support the work of those PTAs.

More on your County Councils...

Registration is now open
