Representatives Larson, Gibson, and Tonko Introduce Legislation to Extend Fuel Cell Tax Incentives 

On September 18, Representatives John Larson (D-CT), Christopher Gibson (R-NY), and Paul Tonko (D-NY) introduced H.R. 3571 the Fuel Cell Tax Extenders Act of 2015.  If passed the bill would extend federal incentives for residential, commercial, and vehicular fuel cell use.  This would renew incentives that expired in 2014, as well as extend those set to expire in December 2016.  The credits would be extended through 2021.

Plug Power Supplies GenKey Solution to New Home Depot Distribution Center 

On September 18, Home Depot hosted a grand opening at its new distribution center, located in Troy Township near Toledo, Ohio.  The company has implemented a GenKey package from Plug Power that includes 172 GenDrive fuel cells for forklift trucks. The facility will feature an outdoor GenFuel hydrogen fueling infrastructure and four indoor hydrogen dispensing stations.   Plug Power will also supply GenCare aftermarket service and support.

Keyes Hyundai in Los Angeles Latest Dealer for Hyundai Tucson Fuel Cell

On September 22, Hyundai Announced that Keyes Hyundai in Los Angeles is the fourth qualified dealer for the Tucson Fuel Cell electric vehicle.  Hyundai began leasing the Tucson Fuel Cell CUV in June 2014, and Hyundai reports that Tucson Fuel Cell drivers have accumulated nearly 700,000 miles on the streets in Southern California.

FuelCell Energy Selected for $23.7 Million DOE Carbon Capture and Sequestration Project

FuelCell Energy has been selected for a $23.7 million Department of Energy carbon capture and sequestration project.  The first phase of the project, sponsored by the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL), will install a two-megawatt (MW) DirectFuelCell (DFC).  The DFC fuel cell will capture carbon from a nearby coal-fired power plant, in addition to producing power.  

The second phase of the project involves the installation of 11 additional DFC fuel cells for further CCS and power generation.  These additional fuel cells will allow the capture of 700 tons of CO2 per day, in addition to 648,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of power.

Sandia National Laboratories, Hydrogenics Collaborate on Port of Honolulu Fuel Cell Project

On August 28, Sandia National Laboratories published an update on its Maritime Hydrogen Fuel Cell Project, which seeks to power the Port of Honolulu as a low-emissions replacement for traditional diesel generators.  The containerized fuel cell system was designed and built by Hydrogenics, who issued their own release here.

The project kickoff was marked with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, attended by U.S. Senator Brian Schatz (D-HI), Young Brothers President Glenn Hong, and Sandia California President Marianne Walck. 

Hickam Air Force Base will supply the fuel cell demonstration project with renewable hydrogen generated through solar-powered electrolysis.

The fuel cell testing demonstration will take place at a Young Brothers' owned facility at the Port of Honolulu over the course of six months, where it will power both refrigerated containers at the port and on-board Young Brothers' barges.  The project's end goal is to create commercial technology for use at ports worldwide.

Doosan Finalizes Agreement with California State University San Marcos for Fuel Cell Installation

On September 1, Doosan Fuel Cell announced that it had finalized an agreement  with California State University San Marcos and BioFuels Energy LLC, a California energy project company, to install two fuel cells at the 304-acre campus to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and water consumption.  

The project will help reduce the University's reliance on the San Diego power grid through the use of two 440 kilowatt (kW) PureCell fuel cells and a 90-ton chiller provided by Doosan.  The system will also  consume no water during power generation, a key performance advantage in drought stricken California.

Toyota Announces Mirai FCEV on Display in Australia for First Time

On September 7, Toyota announced that the Mirai fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) would be on display for the first time in Australia at the 6th World Hydrogen Technology Convention in Sydney from October 11 - 14.

ITM Power to Supply Hydrogen for Shell at Three Retail Locations in the UK
 
On September 10, ITM Power announced that it had signed a strategic agreement with Shell to provide hydrogen refueling stations at three retail locations in the United Kingdom.

The stations will all use ITM Power's electrolyzer technology to generate hydrogen on-site.   The United Kingdom's Office of Low Emissions Vehicles (OLEV) provided �1.89 million ($2.9 million) in funding for the hydrogen refueling stations, with an additional �1.7 million ($2.6 million) in funding provided by the Fuel Cell and Hydrogen Join Undertaking (FCH JU).

Air Products Provides Support for Fuel Cell at Health Care Facility in South Africa

On September 3, Air Products announced the successful launch of a hydrogen fuel cell project at a healthcare facility in Randburg, South Africa.  Air Products partnered with the South African Department of Science and Technology, the City of Johannesburg, and Clean Energy Investments, a South African energy partnership. 

Air Products provided technical assistance in installing the system, which will provide backup power during periods of load-shedding, helping alleviate the frequent power outages in the region.

Linde Opens Sweden's Largest Hydrogen Station

On September 18, the largest hydrogen fueling station in Sweden opened in Stockholm, the city's first. The new AGA (Swedish subsidiary of The Linde Group)  hydrogen fueling station is located near the Stockholm airport and has a capacity of 180 fillings a day at 700 bars. The hydrogen fueling station is supported by the EU via the HIT-2 project (Hydrogen Infrastructure for Transport).

Ballard Power to Launch New Fuel Cell Power Module Configurations in 2016

On September 24, Ballard Power announced that it is developing and plans to launch two new configurations for its FCvelocity-HD7 fuel cell module in 2016.  The two new module configurations will support the emerging power needs in heavy-duty transit applications such as buses.  

The current FCvelocity-HD7 configuration is a 90 kilowatt (kW) system to power large urban transit buses.  The two new configurations will provide 30 kW and 60 kW respectively, and will support smaller buses and provide range extension solutions.

French President Visits Air Liquide for Presentation on Energy Transition through Hydrogen and Biogas

On August 20, French President Francois Hollande, accompained by Sengolene Royal, Minister for Ecology, Sustainable Development and Energy and Andre Vallini, Secretary for Territorial Reform visited Air Liquide's facility in Sassenage. The 
visit topic was on "Energy Transition and Green Growth" and focused on projects relating to hydrogen and biogas.

Hydrogen Mobility Europe Launches with €32 Million Funding

On September 24, the Hydrogen Mobility Europe project was announced, bringing together a coalition of country and regional initiatives to advance hydrogen infrastructure and deploy fuel cell electric vehicles across Europe.  H2ME is co-funded with 32 million from the European Union Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking. 

Under the H2ME initiative, 200 fuel cell electric vehicles, 125 range-extended electric commercial vans, and 29 hydrogen fueling stations will be deployed across 10 countries (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Iceland, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, and the UK) by 2019.

The project partners include Germany's H2 Mobility, Mobilite Hydrogene France, Scandinavian Hydrogen Highway Partnership, and UK H2 Mobility.  In addition to this alliance of initiatives, other participants include industry leaders in fuel cells and hydrogen, including, Element Energy (coordinator), Daimler, SymbioFCell, Hyundai, Honda, Intelligent Energy, Nissan, Air Liquide, BOC, H2Logic, ITM Power, Linde, McPhy Energy, OMV, AREVA, and EIFER.

Hyundai Presents Fuel Cell Race Car for Gran Turismo

On September 15, Hyundai's N 2025 Vision Gran Turismo concept car was introduced at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show.  Weighing in at just 972 kilograms (2,143 pounds), the vehicle's power-to-weight ratio rivals most supercars.

The concept car's dual fuel cell stacks generate 500 kilowatts (kW) (670 horsepower [HP]) and the super capacitor adds 150 kW (201 HP) using energy supplied by regenerative braking.   Power is delivered through four in-wheel motors. 

 
The concept car will be coming exclusively to PlayStation's Gran Turismo video game series.

Plug Power Forms 'Plug Power Capital' to Enable Streamlined Financing Options


On September 14, Plug Power announced that it has formed Plug Power Capital Inc., a capital financing arm that will offer GenFund, giving customers easy access to third-party leases. Through GenFund, Plug Power Capital will work with customers and commercial banks to facilitate project funding for the purchase of Plug Power's hydrogen and fuel cell solutions.  

GenFund will expedite deal closure and will be offered to both material handling and stationary customers through GenKey.  It will also be available on an individual-case basis to assist other non-GenKey customers.

FuelCell Energy Achieves Industry Milestone

On September 17, FuelCell Energy announced that it's 
global fleet of Direct FuelCell� (DFC�) power plants reached significant milestone by generating four billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity since the first commercial installation in 2003.  
In the past nine months alone, DFC� power plants have generated one billion kWh of power.

ITM Power Opens Public Hydrogen Station Next to M1 Motorway

On September 17, ITM Power launched its first public access hydrogen refueling station in Rotherham's Advanced Manufacturing Park, located near the M1 motorway in the U.K.  The facility was upgraded to showcase the company's hydrogen generation equipment.

The station features a 225-kilowatt (kW) wind turbine that powers an electrolyzer, 220 kilograms (kg) of hydrogen storage, a hydrogen dispensing unit, and a 30-kW fuel cell system that will supply backup power generation for nearby buildings.  Funding was provided by InnovateUK and supported by Hyundai, Toyota, and Honda.

Plug Power and Praxair Showcase Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology to Congressman Chris Gibson

On September 22, Plug Power participated in a tour of a Praxair hydrogen plant with Congressman Chris Gibson (R-NY).  A press event was held, followed by a tour of Praxair's hydrogen production facility with Plug Power CEO Andy Marsh and Praxair's East Region Vice President Jeff Barnhard.

Hyundai Developing Self-Driving Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle

On September 2, Hyundai Kia Motors R&D Center Hwaseong, South Korea, announced that it was developing a self-driving "R" fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV).

The vehicle includes a hydrogen fuel cells, solar panels on the roof, a "Lidar" sensor which uses light beams to detect hazards and sustainable materials making up the body.

ITM Power and CEME Announce Agreement to Deploy Solar Hydrogen Station

On Setpemebr 18, ITM Power and the Centre for Engineering and Manufacturing Excellence (CEME) announced an agreement to deploy a solar hydrogen fueling station at the CEME site in Rainham, located in East London.

The CEME site has one of the largest photo-voltaic arrays in the South of England, supplying 115 kW, which will power the hydrogen station.  The station will be deployed as part of the Hydrogen for Innovative Vehicles (HyFIVE) initiative and will open to the public in Q2 2016.

HyFIVE is a $31 million public-private collaboration funded by the European Union Fuel Cell and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking to deploy fuel cell electric vehicles across Europe.

Plug Power's ReliOn Hydrogen Fuel Cell Solution Takes First Place in WAN division of CTIA E-Tech Awards

On September 11, Plug Power announced that its ReliOn hydrogen fuel cell OSP solution took first place in the Wireless Access Network (WAN) division of CTIA's Emerging Technology (E-Tech) awards.  The awards were announced at CTIA's Super Mobility even in Las Vegas, Nevada.  Plug Power's ReliOn solution has a single-cabinet footprint and provides reliable primary and backup power for telecommunications applications.

Hyundai Motor Succeeds in Localizing Key Fuel Cell Part

On September 14, Hyundai Motor Co. announced that it has localized production of membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs).  Hyundai expects this will reduce the overall cost in making fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) in the future.

French Company Prelodis Commissions Plug Power GenDrive Units at Site in France

On September 10, Plug Power announced Prelodis, a French cargo and freight company, as its recent European GenDrive customer. 

Plug Power's  GenDrive fuel cell forklifts have been in operation at a Prelodis' 20,000 square foot greenfield site in Saint Cry en Val, France, since August 31.   Prelodis plans to add a 33,000 square foot expansion to the facility, offering an opportunity for the expansion of the GenDrive fleet as well.

Norwegian Prime Minister Opens Hydrogen Filling Station at Oslo Airport

On September 9, Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg attended an opening ceremony for a hydrogen refueling station at Oslo Aiport, along with representatives from the Oslo Airport,  Akershus county officials, and HYOP, a hydrogen infrastructure company in Norway.

DOE Publishes Presentation Slides on Peak Shaving Applications of Fuel Cell Powered Material Handling Equipment

Small Businesses Invited to Participate in DOE National Laboratory Vouchers Pilot Program, NREL Coordinating Fuel Cell Vouchers

On September 23, the Department of Energy announced a new Small Business Vouchers Pilot (SBV) program through its national laboratories to help small businesses bring next-generation clean energy technology to market faster by enabling them to access national laboratory expertise and specialized equipment.

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is coordinating vouchers in fuel cells, as well as bioenergy and water power technologies.

More than 100 small businesses selected through the pilot's merit review process will receive $50,000 to $300,000 vouchers to exchange for national laboratory technical assistance or initiate collaborative research projects.

U.S. Department of Transportation Announces $22.5 Million to Put More Low and No-Emission Vehicles into Service Across America

The U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Transit Administration (FTA) has announced the availability of $22.5 million through the latest round of the Low or No Emission Vehicle Deployment Program (LoNo).  

The funding will be awarded on a competitive basis to transit agencies and state transportation departments working either independently or jointly with bus manufacturers already making low- and zero-emission buses.  Of the $22.5 million available in LoNo grant funds, a minimum of $3.0 million is available to support facilities and related equipment.  Transit agencies may also use a portion of their annual FTA formula funds to purchase additional vehicles.

The 21st World Hydrogen Energy Conference, taking place from June 13 - 16, 2016 in Zaragoza, Spain, has issued a call for abstracts on a range of fuel cell and hydrogen energy topics.

Topics include hydrogen production, hydrogen storage, fuel cell stacks and components, transportation and aerospace applications, and more.

European Fuel Cell Conference and Exhibition

California Energy Commission Announces Grant Funding Opportunity for Industrial Natural Gas Energy Efficiency Projects

On August 27, the California Energy Commission (CEC) released a funding opportunity announcement (FOA) for grants related to industrial natural gas energy efficiency projects.  For the proposes of this solicitation, the CEC is looking for projects that reduce natural gas for industrial, agriculture, or water facilities, or provide additional benefits with the same amount of natural gas.  Fuel cells powered by natural gas qualify under this FOA.
 
The deadline to submit applications is Thursday, October 29 by 3:00 PM PDT.

NYSERDA Accepting Funding Applications for RPS Customer-Sited Tier Fuel Cell Program 

On January 5, the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) announced a set of two funding opportunities for customer-sited fuel cells - one for a fuel cell system rated 25 kilowatts (kW) or less, and another for systems over 25 kW.  NYSERDA is making up to $50,000 available for fuel cell projects as part of the state's Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS).  

Funding will be available until December 31, 2015.

Part I Round 5 Applications for $4 Billion DOE Loan Program Due December 2

December 2 marks the next deadline for industries to submit their Part I application for the DOE's $4 billion in available loan guarantees for EERE Projects.  As a part of the President's Climate Action Plan, the DOE has allocated $4 billion in loan guarantees to promote EERE projects that avoid or reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Fuel cell and hydrogen technologies are eligible for the EERE loan program.  The five technology areas of interest under the solicitation are:
  • Advanced Grid Integration and Storage
  • Drop-in Biofuels
  • Waste-to-Energy
  • Enhancement of Existing Facilities
  • Efficiency Improvements 
DOE has due dates for the loan program on a rolling basis as follows:

Part I Due Dates
Round 5 - December 2, 2015

Part II Due Dates
Round 4 - November 4, 2015
Round 5 - March 2, 2016

DOE Releases Funding Opportunity Announcement for Native American Clean Energy Projects, Including Fuel Cells

On September 2, the Department of Energy's Office of Indian Energy issued a $6 million funding opportunity announcement (FOA) for clean energy and energy efficiency projects on Indian tribal lands to help combat the threat of climate change.
