WOW! November I/N Tournament Hosts a Record 57 Tables

Unit 141 I/N teams tournament hosted a record 57 tables at Bala Golf Club on November 17th. Over 225 non-life masters with fewer than 500 masterpoints came to play in a Dupli-Swiss and learn more about imps strategy. The photos below barely convey a sense of the sea of tables that filled the many playing rooms!

Great credit goes to I/N Tournament Chair Bruce Lang, who organized the event and recruited such a large and enthusiastic group of players. The directing staff, volunteers, and Bala staff ensured that the entire day ran smoothly. Lang says, "We were just thrilled with the overwhelming response from the players to register as well as their enthusiasm at the tournament." Unit 141 President Mike Giesler, who volunteered at the event, had high praise for the turnout and the event. "The whole day was a great success with enormous participation. I am so pleased with Bruce's I/N program, its growth over the past 18 months, and how well it serves the newer players in our unit. This tournament is just the latest and largest of a growing program."

Congratulations to the winners and thanks to all of the players who participated. We look forward to seeing all of you at future I/N events in 2015.

Bala Winter Sectionals Return in January and February

    Mark your calendars -- the Unit 141 winter sectionals at Bala return on January 9 - 11, 2015 and February 6 - 8, 2015.

For both events, the golf club is closed to members but open exclusively to bridge players so there will be plenty of parking, including valet parking. There will be breakfast and lunch, snacks, and hot drinks to keep the chill away, so join Unit 141 for a great game and great time.

    Table Tips: The Bidding Box

    Bidding Box

Did you know that there are 38 legal bids (plus stop and alert) in the bidding box? Here are a few tips about how to use the bidding box.

    1. Only touch the box when you are ready to bid. When you fondle or fuss with the cards before you make a call, you can convey unauthorized information to your partner. It suggests that you have a problem deciding what to bid and which bids you might be thinking about.

    2. What's up with the stop card? It's your decision whether to use or not use it, but whatever you do be consistent. If you use it, use it all the time it's appropriate. There are guidelines about the best way to use the stop card, so read up and/or consult an experienced player or pro.

    3. Use the pass card to pass. When you intend to pass, set a pass card on the table rather than tap your fingers or pound the table. Some people drum their fingers on the table while they think, so tapping the table sends an ambiguous message. Also, the player sitting to the left of the "table tapper" still has a chance to bid. If he or she takes a moment to think, the tapper needs to set down a pass card anyway. Why not do the right thing from the start?

The Philadelphian Bridge Club (2401 Pennsylvania Ave.) runs a weekly game on Thursday at 7 PM. There is free parking and card fees are only $8. For more information, visit the website: http://www.bridge2401.com/

The North Penn Bridge Club has joined the Common Game for all of its afternoon and evening games and that means pre-dealt hands for all events. The Common Game enables players to compare results across the entire field of participating clubs, view online records and double dummy analysis, and read expert hand analysis for many boards.
