ELIE WIESEL

September 30, 1928 - July 02, 2016

"I swore never to be silent whenever and wherever human beings endure suffering and humiliation. We must always take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented."(The Nobel Peace Prize speech, 1986)

"No human race is superior; no religious faith is inferior. All collective judgments are wrong. Only racists make them."  (Interview to Parade Magazine, 1992)
"For the survivor who chooses to testify, it is clear: his duty is to bear witness for the dead and for the living ... To forget the dead would be akin to killing them a second time." ( from "Night")
The only role I sought was that of witness. I believed that having survived by chance, I was duty-bound to give meaning to my survival, to justify each moment of my life." (from "Why I Write," 1978)

New York Blood Center Says Summer Blood Emergency Continues

NYBC urges public to take action and donate life-saving blood
during the summer blood shortage to come forward

(July 5, 2016) New York, NY - The New York Blood Center (NYBC) is still in the midst of a declared blood emergency and is asking the public to help replenish the blood supply by donating all blood types or by hosting a blood drive in their community.  NYBC's inventory is currently at critically low levels. It is the responsibility of all New Yorkers to donate and help keep the community's summer blood supply in tact - NYBC must be prepared with an adequate supply to withstand any type of emergency.

THIS DAY IN JEWISH HISTORY

July 8 1776: The Liberty Bell was rung to summon citizens of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for the reading of the Declaration of Independence by the Continental Congress. The Liberty Bell takes its name from its inscription taken from Leviticus 25:10 that states, "Proclaim Liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof."
