The Community Services Department is excited to share with you upcoming activities, special events and courses that will be offered throughout February 2015

High On Ice Winter Festival

 

The 2015 High on Ice Winter Festival is right around the corner! From February 6 - 9 be sure to come down to Centennial Park this coming Family Day weekend to view the spectacular ice sculptures. The theme for 2015 is Canada Winter Games, to help celebrate the games being hosted in Prince George the week following the festival.

 

In addition to the snow and ice portion of the festival, be sure to check out some other activities that will be offered including: Mukluk Curling Bonspiel, Over the Line Slow Pitch Tournament, toboggan/snowshoe/mountain bike races, horse drawn sleigh rides, ice fishing derby (Mile 54 Charlie Lake Boat Launch), Crystal Cup Pond Hockey, "Laugh your ice off" comedy show, Outerbridge magic show, ice slides, crafts, games, and more!

Make a Splash at the Pool
 

Assistant Water Safety Instructor

The Red Cross Assistant Water Safety Instructor (AWSI) course is the first step in becoming a Water Safety Instructor of the RC Swim Program. Some of these skills are providing a safe and learning-friendly environment for swimmers; working with swimmers of all ages and abilities; developing strategies to communicate with swimmers of all ages; creating enjoyable learning situations; and influencing swimmers in the RC Swim Preschool, Swim Kids, and Aqua Adults programs to develop water-safe attitudes, swimming and water safety skills.

 

Prerequisites:  Must be 15 and have Red Cross Level 10 swim ability

 

COST:   $470.03 + HST

DATES & TIMES:

February 16, 17, 23, 24 from 4:00pm - 7:00pm

March 2 from 1:00pm - 7:30pm

March 3, 9, 10 from 4:00pm - 7:00pm

 

Please remember to bring a swimsuit, water bottle, sandals, note taking material, and food for lunch break.

 

 

Babysitting Course

The Canadian Red Cross Course is aimed towards children ages 11-15. It teaches the business of babysitting, creating safe environments while caring for babies to school age children and being able to handle emergencies and basic first aid situations.
 
COMPLETION REQUIRMENTS:  100% attendance, skills demonstration, and 75% min. passing grade on written exam
COST:   $94.65

DATES & TIMES:

February 13 from 4:00pm - 7:00pm
February 14 from 9:00am to 2:30pm at the North Peace Leisure Pool

  
Bronze Medallion/Bronze Cross
This is a combined course that will cover both the Bronze Medallion and Bronze Cross courses.  Bronze Cross is also worth 2 Grade 11 High School Credits.
  
Bronze Medallion teaches an understanding of the lifesaving principles embodied in the four components of water rescue education - judgement, knowledge, skill and fitness. Rescuers learn self-rescue techniques, defense and release methods, and tows and carries in preparation for challenging rescues involving conscious and unconscious victims of various types, including spinal injuries and circulatory emergencies. Lifesavers develop stroke efficiency and endurance in a timed swim. Bronze Medallion includes the CPR-A certification.
  
Bronze Cross is designed for lifesavers who want the challenge of more advanced training including an introduction to safety supervision in aquatic facilities. Candidates develop proficiency at performing patient assessments, managing aquatic spinal injuries, and preventing the loss of life in a variety of aquatic emergencies, while developing stroke endurance and fitness training Bronze Cross includes the CPR-C certification and is one of the pre-requisite awards for all advanced Lifeguarding and Leadership training programs.
 
Prerequisites: Must have Level 10 swim skills or equivalent. You must be 13 years older or completed Bronze Star - MUST HAVE PROOF OF AGE! Please bring in a government issued form of ID. Failure to do so will result in access to the class being denied.
  
Cost: $385.60 + tax

Family Swim Night
Hey moms & dads bring your little ones in for some fun & games in the leisure pool on

Junior Lifeguard Club
Kids learn attitudes and skills that could one day save a life their life, or someone else's. The Junior Lifeguard Club (JLC) is designed to let kids participate in activities similar to those of real lifeguards in a safe, fun and controlled setting. But just as important, kids experience teamwork and a sense of belonging. They become part of a club, the Junior Lifeguard Club.
  
The Junior Lifeguard Club is a place for kids to:
  • Learn about lifesaving and life guarding
  • Enjoy friendly competition and special events
  • Challenge themselves to aim for personal bests
  • Hang out
  • Get fit
  • Make friends
  • Have a great time
  
The Junior Lifeguard Club is a unique program, designed as a coaching environment of long-term goals and short-term personal best achievements.
  
Prerequisites:  Able to  swim 1 length of the pool and tread water for 1 minute
Dates & Times:  Wednesdays from 4:30pm - 6:00pm & Saturdays from 10:30am - 12:00pm

Bring your sweetheart to the Oval for some skating on Saturday, February 14 from 5:30pm to 7:30pm

Non Instructional Day - February 6

Parent and Tot - Stick N' Puck  

10:00-11:00am (West Arena)  Tots (ages 4-7) must be accompanied on ice by an adult (16+). Children are required to wear full gear, parent/guardian must have at least a stick, hockey helmet, gloves, and skates.  This session is strictly recreational. No shooting pucks, only passing and stick handling are permitted.

 

Drop-in Hockey

10:30-11:45 am Ages: 8 - 11 - East Ice

12:00-1:15 pm  Ages:  12 - 15 - East Ice

12:00-1:00pm  Ages:  16+ - West Ice

 

Public Skating

12:00-3:00pm  - Oval
