The Community Services Department is excited to share with you upcoming activities, special events and courses that will be offered in the month of January 2014. 
Christmas Tree Pick-up

Place your Christmas tree at the curb before 9:00am on January 4 and the City of Fort St. John along with local community groups will come remove it for you!  Please remember to remove all decorations, tinsel and plastic tree bags.

 

Residents may also drop off their Christmas trees at the City's Snow Removal Dump Site located at 79th Avenue and 93rd Street, beside DGS Astro Paving.

 

These trees will be chipped and used along the City's trail system.

 

High On Ice Winter Festival
High on Ice  is Fort St. John's Winter Festival that takes place annually in February. Each year this event includes International carving displays, Local carving competition challenges, Snow sculpting, Toboggan races, Children's Activities, Sleigh Rides, Ice Fishing Derby, an Over the Line (OTL) Tournament, Comedy shows, Pond Hockey, Curling and so much more! It is organized by a planning committee made up of various community organizations and community members all working together to celebrate life in the North.

 

The community celebration event of High on Ice promotes overall community involvement for demographics that include families, adults, children and seniors. It is one of Fort St. John's signature community events that residents are proud of and enjoy with new events occurring every year.  This celebration revolves around the winter season and the many opportunities for outdoor activities.

 

Want to learn how to carve ice or sculpt snow? Take part in one of our exciting workshops hosted by professional ice carver Chris Foltz and snow carver Carl Schlichting. New Year's Fitness Challenge is a great fitness program for the New Year. This program is perfect for those of you looking to start off the New Year with some motivation and a great program that offers a ton of variety at the NPLP, Pomeroy Sports Centre & Kids Arena Fieldhouse.

Assistant Water Safety Instructor - In this prerequisite for the Red Cross Water Safety Instructor course, candidates learn foundation instructional skills including teaching methods, learning styles, physical principles, progressions, communication, safety supervision and feedback.

  • Cost: $470.09+ tax

Red Cross Swim Lessons - Registration is available for this one day a week session.

Pomeroy Sport Centre
Individual & Corporate Walking ChallengesStart 2014 with a walk across our Nation stopping at each province's capital - Go the Distance and Back! This journey is approximately 17,856km. Your journey will start in Fort St. John then it is off to Victoria, Edmonton, Regina, Winnipeg, Toronto, Quebec City, Fredericton, Charlottetown, Halifax, St. John's (NF), Iqaluit, Yellowknife, Whitehorse and then it's back to Fort St. John! WOW.. sounds like more than 6 weeks worth of walking? Don't worry, we have your back - each lap around the Northern Vac Track will equal 31km. YOU CAN DO IT!!
 

Registration is FREE! Sign up with the Walking Track Attendant on the Northern Vac Track or with a Customer Service Representative at the Visitor Centre located on the first level of the Pomeroy Sport Centre.
