The Community Services Department is excited to share with you upcoming activities, special events and courses that we will be offering throughout the month of October

Aquatic Emergency Care
Take your lifesaving training to the next level! If you are planning to be a professional lifeguard or looking for more comprehensive first aid and lifesaving training, Aquatic Emergency Care (AEC) will give you the edge. AEC provides hands-on training in the care of injuries and illness common to both aquatic and non-aquatic settings.  AEC includes all Standard First Aid items.   

Pre-requisites: Bronze Medallion

Dates: November 1 - 3
Time: 5:00pm - 9:00pm and 10:00am - 7:00pm
Investment: $263.64 + tax

Babysitting Course

This two-day course was designed to give young people the necessary tools to be responsible babysitters; keeping children in their care safe and happy. Topics covered include learning about the different developmental stages of children and the skills required to care for them: infants, toddlers, preschoolers and school age children. The babysitter will learn techniques for behavioral problems as well as how to handle emergencies and understand basic first aid skills. They will also complete the program with new ideas of how to entertain the children in their care with games and fun activities.

 

Pre-Requsites: Ages 11 - 15 years
Cost: $94.64 + tax
Dates: October 5 & 6
Time: 9:00am - 1:00pm (must attend both days for certificate)

Bronze Cross

This course is designed for lifesavers who want the challenge of more advanced training including an introduction to safety supervision in aquatic facilities. Candidates develop proficiency at performing patient assessments, managing aquatic spinal injuries, and preventing the loss of life in a variety of aquatic emergencies, while developing stroke endurance and fitness training skills. Bronze Cross includes the CPR-C certification and is one of the pre-requisite awards for all advanced Lifeguarding and Leadership training programs. Bronze Cross is also worth 2 Grade 11 High School Credits.

 

Pre-requisites:  Bronze Medallion

Dates: October 8, 9, 12, 22, 24, 26
Time: 5:00pm - 9:00pm and 10:00am - 5:00pm

Junior Lifeguard Club and Canadian Swim Patrol

The JLC Club is designed to let kids participate in activities similar to those of real lifeguards - in a safe, fun and controlled setting. Kids get to experience teamwork and a sense of belonging. The JLC Club is a place for kids to:

  • Learn about lifesaving and lifeguarding
  • Enjoy friendly competition
  • Challenge themselves to aim for personal bests
  • Get Fit
  • Make new friends and have a great time

 

Dates: Wednesdays and Sundays (October 2- December 22)
Time: 3:30 pm-5:00 pm Wednesdays & 11:00am - 12:30pm Sundays
Location: North Peace Leisure Pool
Cost: $229.34 

Preschool Playday at the Pool
Come and join us for a Pre School Play Days at the North Peace Leisure Pool. Every second Thursday of each month, parents and children are invited to come down and take part in fun activities and games geared towards children 5 & under. This is a great opportunity to introduce your children to the world of water while having some fun and meeting new people.

Theme:  Fall Festival 
Santa Claus Parade 

The annual Santa Claus is coming up! Save the date for Friday November  15.

  

The parade will start at 6:00pm followed by the annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony at Centennial Park.  There will be complimentary hot dogs, hot chocolate, bonfire and entertainment to help you get into Christmas spirit.

  

Want to be part of the parade? Fill out the parade entry form which is available at our website, and drop it off at City Hall or the Pomeroy Sport Centre before November 13.

Teen Night at the Pool
Round up your friends and head to the North Peace Leisure Pool for some TEEN ONLY fun from 7:00PM - 10:00PM! The pool will close the doors to the general public and host a themed activity night. You can join in the games and activities, or lounge with friends in the hot spots. There will be lots of pizza, pop and prizes to go around! This event is for teens aged 12 - 16 only.

Cost is $6.00.
Date:  October 17
Time:  7pm - 10pm

 *PLEASE NOTE: The following evening swim events; Hydro Rider, Lap swim & Public swim will be canceled due to Teen Night from 7pm-10pm 

Visitor Centre has a new location! 

 We are now located in the Pomeroy Sport Centre and loving our new home!  Come see for yourself and while you are here, do some shopping!

 

There's something for everyone at the City of Fort St. John Visitor Centre souvenir shop and you don't have to be a tourist to enjoy shopping here!

 

Have your kids gone to college?  Why not send them a care package with something uniquely Fort St. John to help them remember home? Our battery-free iPhone/iPod speakers are definitely a hit, as is our collection of Moose souvenirs. We have everything from a Moose Crossing sign for their dorm room to light-up Moose pens and the famous Mail-A-Moose Postcard.

 

Perhaps you are heading out for one last weekend of camping?  Stop by the Visitor Centre for some distinctive and fun camping gear! We have picnic blankets, fishing lures, bug spray, visors, auto air fresheners and Wine to Go cups!  

Fort St. John pet owners can find some unique and useful items as well. Choose from pet bandanas, collapsible travel dog bowls, tennis ball doggie bones and doggie pick up baggies in a handy carry case.
