The Community Services Department is excited to share with you upcoming activities, special events and courses that we will be offering throughout the month of August

Assistant Water Safety Instructor (AWSI)

In this prerequisite for the Red Cross Water Safety Instructor course, candidates learn foundation instructional skills including teaching methods, learning styles, physical principles, progressions, communication, safety supervision and feedback.

 

Prerequisites: Must be 15 years old

Date: August 19-23
Time: 11:00am - 6:00pm
Location: North Peace Leisure Pool
Cost: $470.03

  

Babysitting Course

This course was designed to give young people the necessary tools to be responsible babysitters; keeping children in their care safe and happy. Topics covered include learning about the different developmental stages of children and the skills required to care for them: infants, toddlers, preschoolers and school age children. The babysitter will learn techniques for behavioral problems as well as how to handle emergencies and understand basic first aid skills. They will also complete the program with new ideas of how to entertain the children in their care with games and fun activities. Minimum age requirement is 11 years old.

 

Pre-Requsites: Ages 11 - 15 years

Dates: August 13 & 14

Time: 9:00am - 1:00pm (must attend both days for certificate)

Location: North Peace Leisure Pool

There's something for everyone at the City of Fort St. John Visitor Centre souvenir shop and you don't have to be a tourist to enjoy shopping here!

 

When your kids are heading back to college this fall, why not give them something uniquely Fort St. John to help them remember home? Our battery-free iPhone/iPod speakers are definitely a hit, as is our collection of Moose souvenirs. We have everything from a Moose Crossing sign for their dorm room to light-up Moose pens and the famous Mail-A-Moose Postcard.

 

If you're heading out for a weekend of camping come by the Visitor Centre for some distinctive and fun camping gear! We have picnic blankets, fishing lures, bug spray, visors, auto air fresheners and, most importantly - Wine to Go cups!

Fort St. John pet owners can find some unique and useful items as well. Choose from pet bandanas, collapsible travel dog bowls, tennis ball doggie bones and doggie pick up baggies in a handy carry case.  

 

We also have a great selection of souvenir t-shirts in sizes ranging from Toddlers to Adult. They are available in a wide range of colors and styles bound to suit everyone in the family. And our popular ball caps and kid's sunhats are perfect for this time of year.

Lifesaving Instructor 

A Lifesaving Instructor (LSI) is trained to teach and evaluate the Canadian Swim Patrol program, Bronze programs, Fitness and Excellence programs. Instructor candidates are taught learning styles and teaching methods as they apply to water rescue, first aid, and related aquatic skills in the Canadian Lifesaving Program. Candidates also learn about long-range and short-term planning, class management, safety supervision and the principles of evaluation. The Lifesaving Instructor certification is the prerequisite for all other Lifesaving Society instructor certifications.

  

Prerequisites: You must be 16 years older and have completed Bronze Cross

Dates: August 16, 17, 23 & 24
Time: Fridays 6pm-10pm,
Saturdays 9am-6pm

Movie In The Park

Don't miss our second movie in the park on August 23 in Centennial Park. This will be the perfect time to end our beautiful and fun summer events! First movie will start at 7:30pm followed by a second movie. Movies are still To Be Announced. Remember to bring your chair and a blanket! Photo Scavenger Hunt - Register Today!

The Photo Scavenger Hunt is a fun, family-friendly, summer event organized by the City of Fort St John Visitor Centre. Through this popular event our community is given the opportunity to showcase their talent while exposing the beauty of our City as well as the North Peace region. The event encourages participants to venture out into the City and area as well as promotes active living in Fort St John.  

 

The deadline for the final photo submissions is 6pm on August 11
Photos MUST be taken in the Fort St. John area.

 

NEW this year! 

1. Showcase one of Fort St John's natural landscapes, and/or attractions, for your chance to win a prize! Send us one video showcasing your flash mob/Rick Mercer Rant style video) Please see Rules and Regulations for more details.

2. Submit 15 photos weekly (by 2 PM Sunday) to receive 15 bonus points (weekly deadlines: July 28, August 4)

Play In The Park
Come enjoy your summer days with the City of Fort St. John and Play in the Park! Play in the Park is a free program that takes place in different parks throughout the city for the months of July and August. This program runs for two hours each session, twice a week, and includes activities like; sports, crafts, games, stories and so much more! All ages are welcome; however the program is designed for children aged 5 and under. Children must be accompanied by an adult during the activities. Pre School Play Day

Come and join us at our Pre School Play Day at the North Peace Leisure Pool. Every second Thursday of each month, parents and children are invited to come down and take part in fun activities and games geared towards children 5 & under. This is a great opportunity to introduce your children to the world of water while having some fun and meeting new people. Regular pool admission applies.
