The Community Services Department is excited to share with you upcoming activities, special events and courses that we will be offering throughout the month of July

  

On the left side of this newsletter, you will find helpful links including a link to the online Calendar of Events which has listings for Fort St. John and area.   

 

Aquatic Emergency Care (AEC)

Take your lifesaving training to the next level! If you are planning to be a professional lifeguard or looking for more comprehensive first aid and lifesaving training, Aquatic Emergency Care (AEC) will give you the edge. AEC provides hands-on training in the care of injuries and illness common to both aquatic and non-aquatic settings.  AEC includes all Standard First Aid items.

 

Pre-requisites: Bronze Medallion

Dates: July 4-6
Time: 11:00am - 7:00pm
Investment: $ 263.64

 

Babysitting Course

This course was designed to give young people the necessary tools to be responsible babysitters; keeping children in their care safe and happy. Topics covered include learning about the different developmental stages of children and the skills required to care for them: infants, toddlers, preschoolers and school age children. The babysitter will learn techniques for behavioral problems as well as how to handle emergencies and understand basic first aid skills. They will also complete the program with new ideas of how to entertain the children in their care with games and fun activities. Minimum age requirement is 11 years old.

 

Pre-Requsites: Ages 11 - 15 years

Dates: July 30 & 31

Time: 9:00am - 1:00pm (must attend both days for certificate)

Location: North Peace Leisure Pool 

Investment: $94.64 + tax 
      

Canada Day Celebrations

Come and check out Fort St. John's annual Canada Day Celebrations in Centennial Park on July 1st! Start the festivities with the Canada Day Parade and then make your way to Centennial Park to enjoy the Classic Cruisers Show 'n Shine, live entertainment, Farmers' Market, crafts, games, arts market, food vendors and so much more! Complete your day with an amazing fireworks display at dusk.

Family Fun In The Sun
Family Fun in the Sun is a series of community events held during summer months that is designed to attract families. Due to the popular events, all ages and groups come out to join in the festive activities outdoors. The focus of the activities is to draw in community members to show "there's something for everyone" . This event is a great way to promote our family values and encourage a healthy active lifestyle. All events planned during the Family Fun in the Sun series are free. The signature event of Family Fun in the Sun is the Movie Nights in the Park. The movie is usually held in Centennial Park with an outdoor screen playing a double feature.

 

Movie In The Park

Movie in the park dates are: July 26 & August 23.

Don't miss the first movie in the park on July 26, where the brilliant movies "Brave" & "The Host" will be showcased. First movie will start at 7:30pm at Centennial Park. Remember to bring your chair and a blanket!

  
National Lifeguard Service (NLS)

The National Lifeguard Service� (NLS) Instructor course prepares candidates to teach and evaluate NLS Pool. Instructor candidates learn specific strategies designed to train lifeguards in advanced rescue techniques, public relations issues and first aid, as well as how to present material that will prepare lifeguards for any major aspect of supervising the public in an aquatic setting.

 

Pre-Requisites: Standard First Aid or Aquatic Emergency Care certification Bronze Cross certification & 16 years of age by last day of course

 

Date: July 11, 12, 13, 25, 26 & 27
Time: 10:00am - 7:00pm

Photo Scavenger Hunt
10th Annual Photo Scavenger Hunt starts July 20

The Photo Scavenger Hunt is a fun, family-friendly, summer event organized by the City of Fort St John Visitor Centre. Through this popular event our community is given the opportunity to showcase their talent while exposing the beauty of our City as well as the North Peace region. The event encourages participants to venture out into the City and area as well as promotes active living in Fort St John.  

 

Event Date: July 20-August 11
Registration Begins: July 6
Bonus points will be awarded to anyone that registers before July 13

 

The deadline for the final photo submissions is 6pm on August 11
Photos MUST be taken in the Fort St. John area

 

NEW this year! 

1. Showcase one of Fort St John's natural landscapes, and/or attractions, for your chance to win a prize! Send us one video showcasing your flash mob/Rick Mercer Rant style video) Please see Rules and Regulations for more details.

2. Submit 15 photos weekly (by 2 PM Sunday) to receive 15 bonus points (weekly deadlines: July 28, August 4)

 

On July 20 stop by the Visitor Centre to pick up you Clue List! 

 

Play In The Park
Come enjoy your summer days with the City of Fort St. John and Play in the Park! Play in the Park is a free program that takes place in different parks throughout the city for the months of July and August. This program runs for two hours each session, twice a week, and includes activities like; sports, crafts, games, stories and so much more! All ages are welcome; however the program is designed for children aged 5 and under. Children must be accompanied by an adult during the activities
  
 
 
 
Preschool Play Day

Come and join us for a Preschool Play Day at the North Peace Leisure Pool. Every second Thursday of each month, parents and children are invited to come down and take part in fun activities and games geared towards children 5 & under. This is a great opportunity to introduce your children to the world of water while having some fun and meeting new people.

Road Trip in BC this summer!
Planning your trip should be almost as much fun as actually taking it! So take a few moments and start thinking about your British Columbia vacation. Plan to take a road trip in BC this summer.

Whether you are looking to plan a relaxing circle trip to the numerous hot springs in the Kootenay area (did you know there are 13 hot springs in just this area?) or take a spontaneous camping trip in the Cariboo Chilcotin region, we have the information for you.

 

Explore the Thompson Okanagan's fine wine and orchards, while enjoying the warm weather and picturesque landscapes.

Or perhaps an adventurous holiday hiking or biking the backcountry? We have backcountry map books for the adventurous explorers that want to discover what northern BC has to offer.

 

How about a fishing or hunting trip either in the Fort St. John area or elsewhere in the province? Stop by the City of Fort St. John Visitor Centre for outdoor travel information as well as the latest information on regulations, in fact, why not purchase your licenses and tags while you are here? 

 

And of course, if you are heading north on the Alaska Highway, we have all you need to know - from road reports and weather conditions to maps and gas stations along the way.

Rotary Skatepark Ground Breaking Ceremony

The City of Fort St. John and our partners, the Fort St. John and District Sport Council and the Skatepark Committee are excited to announce the official groundbreaking for the new Rotary Skatepark in Fort St. John! 


This is a milestone for the Fort St. John and District Sport Council and Skatepark Committee. This group is commended for their dedication and commitment to bring a new public amenity to our community that will serve our youth.

 

The new Skatepark will be located at 93rd Street and 93rd Avenue on land provided by the City across from the construction site of the new fire hall. Construction of the new Skatepark has already started and is projected to be completed in 16 weeks.

Teen Night
Round up your friends and head to the North Peace Leisure Pool for some TEEN ONLY fun! The pool will close the doors to the general public and host a themed activity night. You can join in the games and activities, or lounge with friends in the hot spots. There will be lots of pizza, pop and prizes to go around! This event is for teens aged 12 - 16 only.
