This course was designed to give young people the necessary tools to be responsible babysitters; keeping children in their care safe and happy. Topics covered include learning about the different developmental stages of children and the skills required to care for them: infants, toddlers, preschoolers and school age children. The babysitter will learn techniques for behavioral problems as well as how to handle emergencies and understand basic first aid skills. They will also complete the program with new ideas of how to entertain the children in their care with games and fun activities. Minimum age requirement is 11 years old.

Bronze Medallion/Cross
Bronze Medallion
This course teaches an understanding of the lifesaving principles embodied in the four components of water rescue education - judgment, knowledge, skill and fitness. Rescuers learn self-rescue techniques, defense and release methods, and tows and carries in preparation for challenging rescues involving conscious and unconscious victims of various types, including spinal injuries and circulatory emergencies. Lifesavers develop stroke efficiency and endurance in a timed swim. Includes the CPR-A certification.
Bronze Cross
This course is designed for lifesavers who want the challenge of more advanced training including an introduction to safety supervision in aquatic facilities. Candidates develop proficiency at performing patient assessments, managing aquatic spinal injuries, and preventing the loss of life in a variety of aquatic emergencies, while developing stroke endurance and fitness training skills. Bronze Cross includes the CPR-C certification and is one of the pre-requisite awards for all advanced Lifeguarding and Leadership training programs. Bronze Cross is also worth 2 Grade 11 High School Credits.
Pre-requisites: Must be 13 years old OR have completed Bronze Star.

The City of Fort St. John Visitor Centre dedicates the month of June each year to provide opportunities for locals to rediscover our city and surrounding areas. Residents are encouraged to get out and enjoy their own backyard! Experience something new or long-forgotten fun!
This popular month-long event annually kicks off with the eagerly anticipated "Energetic Amazing Race" which was inspired by TV show "Amazing Race". Participants race to complete fun tasks, experiencing roadblocks along the way!

World Fair

Event Information: The World Fair is a community cultural FREE event that aims to raise awareness and appreciation for the values, traditions, and heritage of diverse cultures in the City of Fort St. John.
This event is organized by the Fort St. John League of United Youths. The group seeks to promote multiculturalism and friendship among different cultures plus it will be a great chance to meet people from other parts of the world. Family Fun In The Sun
This series of community events are held during summer months (July & August) and are designed to attract families. Due to the popularity of the events, all ages and groups come out to join in the festive activities outdoors. The focus of the activities is to draw in community members to show "there's something for everyone". This event is a great way to promote our family values and encourage a healthy active lifestyle. All events planned during the Family Fun in the Sun series are free. The signature event of Family Fun in the Sun is the Movie Nights in the Park. Play In The Park
Come enjoy your summer days with the City of Fort St. John and Play in the Park! Play in the Park is a free program that takes place in different parks throughout the city for the months of July and August. This program runs for two hours each session, twice a week, and includes activities like; sports, crafts, games, stories and so much more! All ages are welcome; however the program is designed for children aged 5 and under. Children must be accompanied by an adult during the activities. Preschool Play Day
Come and join us at our Preschool Play Day at the North Peace Leisure Pool. Every second Thursday of each month, parents and children are invited to come down and take part in fun activities and games geared towards children 5 & under. This is a great opportunity to introduce your children to the world of water while having some fun and meeting new people. Regular pool admission applies.

Rollerblading/Rollerskating
From May 21 to June 9 there will be rollerblading/rollerskating on the oval at the Pomeroy Sport Centre from 12:00pm-1:00pm and 7:00pm-9:00pm, Monday-Friday. Helmets are required for children 8 and under but recommended for everyone. Knee, wrist and elbow pads are recommended for everyone.
Cost = FREE!

Rotary Spray Park
With the warm weather fast approaching we would like to remind everyone that the Spray Park is open and everything is functional!
Located beside the North Peace Leisure Pool and the North Peace Arena, the Spray Park offers outdoor fun in the sun for the entire family. It is open from 10am to 9pm.

NEW! Tree Planting Rebate Program
The City of Fort St. John is excited to launch a new Tree Planting Rebate Program formerly known as Arbour Day.
Between May 21 and June 21, 2013, residents can apply for a rebate of up to $50 (per tree) and up to 2 trees per property to be rebated on your Fort St. John utility account. There are a limited number of rebates available and applications will be processed
on a first come, first served basis at City Hall. Residents interested in applying for the rebate, can pick up rebate form and brochure at City Hall or online.

Tween Night
No, it's not teen night - it's TWEEN night! The North Peace Leisure Pool will close the doors to the general public so ONLY youth aged 8-12 can have a blast at the pool! Come hang out from 7:00pm-9:00pm! There will be games, prizes, pizza and juice.

During the first week of June, Red Cross begins their Summer Safety campaign with Water Safety Week. This campaign aims to increase public awareness of the importance of swimming education and water safety. Join us at the pool for this week-long campaign to help more people understand Water Safety and why it's so important!

Aquatic Emergency Care (AEC)
Take your lifesaving training to the next level! If you are planning to be a professional lifeguard or looking for more comprehensive first aid and lifesaving training, Aquatic Emergency Care (AEC) will give you the edge. AEC provides hands-on training in the care of injuries and illness common to both aquatic and non-aquatic settings. AEC includes all Standard First Aid items.

National Lifeguard Service (NLS)
The National Lifeguard ServiceŽ (NLS) Instructor course prepares candidates to teach and evaluate NLS Pool. Instructor candidates learn specific strategies designed to train lifeguards in advanced rescue techniques, public relations issues and first aid, as well as how to present material that will prepare lifeguards for any major aspect of supervising the public in an aquatic setting.
Pre-Requisites: Standard First Aid or Aquatic Emergency Care certification Bronze Cross certification & 16 years of age by last day of course
